Jose Mourinho gave away his Europa League runners-up medal as Sevilla ended the Roma manager’s perfect record in European finals.
Mourinho was bidding to become the most decorated European manager in history with six major trophies but saw his side beaten on penalties in Budapest.
The match had ended 1-1 after extra-time and went all the way to a penalty shootout, with Sevilla winning 4-1.
Mourinho had cut an agitated figure throughout and immediately removed the runners-up medal from his neck after being presented with it by UEFA delegates.
He then threw the medal into the crowd to a young fan, while Sevilla celebrated with the prize that both sets of players wanted.
“I’ve won five European finals over the years and on this occasion I’m no less proud than the five times I won,” said Mourinho.
“I am proud of the players. I told them before that we would either be leaving with the cup or we’d be dead on our feet.
“We’re leaving dead on our feet. The players are totally exhausted and so am I, both physically and psychologically.”
Roma had drawn first blood through Paulo Dybala’s composed finish in the first half but Gianluca Mancini’s own goal saw the match go to extra time.
The result means Tammy Abraham failed to become the first player to win the Europa Conference League, Europa League and Champions League.

Meanwhile, Sevilla’s perfect record in Europa League finals is extended to seven wins, while Mourinho has lost his first of six European finals.
Roma’s former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling added: “It’s a big disappointment. When it comes to penalties it’s hard to lose.
“We were determined to win and we left everything on the pitch. Seeing others celebrate will stay with us for a long time. We have to try to have another chance next season.”
