Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher admits he was wrong about ‘special’ Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez and claims him and Casemiro have made Red Devils ‘more powerful’

Jamie Carragher has confessed that he was wrong to doubt Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez.

The Argentinian arrived in the summer for £46million, with Carragher expressing his concerns Martinez would be able to cope in the Premier League due to his 5ft 9in frame.

However, as the season has progressed, he appears to have changed his mind one of Erik ten Hag’s now key players.

Speaking to United legend Gary Neville on The Overlap, he said: “I think he’s been brilliant.

“To be that small and play centre-back, you’ve obviously got to be a special player, a good player. Now, I didn’t think someone of that size could cope in the Premier League and he has coped.

“I think he’s been brilliant. When I said before about United’s spirit, I think he’s been a big part. I think there was a game I saw a few weeks ago, he was actually subbed and someone scored maybe a late goal.

“He was right involved, this was only two or three weeks ago. Obviously you’ve seen him in the World Cup, Argentinian, he’s got that fight.

“I think him and Casemiro coming in, it feels more powerful, more strong. But I didn’t think a centre-back would be able to cope that size.

“Now listen, you can still get exposed in the air, that has to happen at some stage. Every player has got weaknesses, the best players hide them or make sure they don’t get exposed and I think he’s a really good player. He’s surprised me with the way he’s coped.”

Martinez has so far kept 13 clean sheets during his debut season at United, scoring one goal for them.

The 25-year-old has formed a trusty defensive partnership with Raphael Varane for much of the campaign.

As mentioned, he also won the World Cup with Argentina in December and could win more silverware later this season in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle.
