Lleyton Hewitt thinks Novak Djokovic will “have no comparison” in terms of the records when he finishes his astonishing career. Just this year, 36-year-old Djokovic broke some of the biggest tennis records. In 2023, Djokovic became the first-ever man with 24 Grand Slam titles.
Also, Djokovic set a new record for the most weeks spent at the world No 1 spot by a man or woman – the Serb is also the first-ever tennis player with 400 weeks at the top spot. At this past ATP Finals, Djokovic won a record-breaking seventh title and also extended his all-time Year-End No 1 record to eight.
Djokovic is also the oldest ATP player to seal the Year-End No 1 award – the previous record was also owned by him as the Serb was 34 when he finished the 2021 season at No 1. “It’s incredible. Every record that he continually breaks now is remarkable.
There’s going to be no comparison at the end of his career in terms of his playing ability and the records … that he holds. It’s quite remarkable,” Hewitt told Fox Sports Australia.
Hewitt on Djokovic’s ATP Finals win
In Turin, Djokovic went 2-1 in the group stage and then won the title after beating Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in the semifinal and final, respectively.
Djokovic’s lone loss in Turin came in the group stage against Sinner. But after losing to Sinner in the group stage, Djokovic bounced back a few days later by ousting the Italian 6-3 6-3 in the final. “The tennis that he was able to perform when he needed to in the most important moments in the Tour Finals was as good at tennis as you will see,” Hewitt said.
After winning the ATP Finals, Djokovic had a message for his competition – the Serb told his rivals his motivation will remain the same next year. It remains to be seen if Djokovic can write more tennis history in 2024.
