Newcastle United vs Manchester United predictions

A few weeks ago, Manchester United were touted as potential Premier League title contenders.

Those ambitions have now evaporated after a historic 7-0 demolition by Liverpool and a goalless draw with Southampton before the international break.

In fact, United are in danger of being dragged back into a race for a top-four finish, something they might have taken for granted after an excellent run of post-World Cup form.

Erik ten Hag’s team are still odds-on favourites to qualify for the Champions League alongside Arsenal, Manchester City and one other.

Their lead over fifth-placed Newcastle stands at just three points, while they hold a one-point advantage over Tottenham Hotspur in fourth.

United have also played two fewer games than Spurs, who have been plunged into disarray with various off-field events over the last fortnight.

Ten Hag will be calling for concentration, however. A defeat this weekend would see United overtaken by Newcastle.

This could still be a terrific campaign for the Red Devils, who won the EFL Cup in February and remain alive in the FA Cup and the Europa League.

A cup treble remains a possibility but United must not lose focus on the Premier League as they attempt to hold off the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle, Liverpool and Brighton & Hove Albion, whom they will face in the FA Cup semi-final.

This weekend’s encounter at St James’ Park is therefore vital for both of these Champions League chasers.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United betting tips

This looks likely to be a hard-fought game between two contenders for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Under 2.5 goals – 10/11 (bet365)

As we enter the business end of the campaign, certain head-to-head clashes between teams competing for the same goal are likely to be cagey.

This is one such occasion. That is not to say Newcastle and Manchester United will be completely risk-averse on Sunday, but nor will either side go gung-ho in search of all three points.

Newcastle’s matches are relatively low-scoring at the best of times. Despite a dip in form in January and February, the Magpies still have by far and away the strongest defence in the Premier League.

Their backline has been breached on just 19 occasions, six fewer than the next-best Manchester City.

No team in the division has kept more clean sheets than Newcastle, who have shut out their opponents in close to half of their 26 outings.

When it comes to putting the ball in the back of the net, these two sides have similar records. Manchester United rank seventh for goals scored with 41, while Newcastle are eighth with 39.

Neither is among the most prolific teams in the top flight and we could therefore see a tight, tense encounter at St James’ Park.

Newcastle to score first – 4/5 (bet365)

The EFL Cup final was Newcastle’s first appearance at Wembley since 1999. They were previously one of only a handful of teams in the top four divisions of English football that had not played at the ground since it was rebuilt in the 2000s.

Newcastle missed the chance to win their first major trophy since 1969, but their fans still made the most of a rare trip to the national stadium.

On the pitch, though, Eddie Howe’s charges were well beaten by Manchester United, who ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford in the first half.

Newcastle had plenty of the ball thereafter but they were unable to find a way past David de Gea in the opposition goal.

It is no doubt a source of disappointment for the club’s supporters that the final came amid a poor run of form for Howe’s side.

But Newcastle rallied before the international break, winning back-to-back games against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest to reassert their top-four credentials.

Roared on by a passionate home crowd at St James’, they will look to make a fast start on Sunday.

Newcastle have scored the first goal in eight of their 13 home games this season, and they could make it nine in 14 here.

Alexander Isak to score any time – 15/8 (bet365)

It is surely no coincidence that Newcastle’s recent upturn in form has coincided with the return to the starting XI of Alexander Isak.

After a strong start to the season, Callum Wilson has scored only one goal in his last 15 club appearances in all competitions.

Isak returned to the line-up for the meeting with Wolves on March 12 and kept his place for the trip to Nottingham Forest five days later.

The Sweden international notched three goals across those two matches, helping Newcastle to back-to-back victories in the Premier League for the first time since the turn of the year.

Isak is an excellent player and after various injury issues which have denied him a run of matches in the team, he might belatedly be about to catch fire.

The striker has still only started seven league games since his move from Real Sociedad, but he will be a threat to Manchester United’s backline on Sunday.
