Ons Jabeur reveals she and her husband had a deal they would try to conceive a baby if she accomplished her dream of becoming a Grand Slam champion at last year’s Wimbledon.
Jabeur, who turned 29 in August, made her third Grand Slam final at The Championships last year. After losing to Elena Rybakina in the 2022 Wimbledon final and also falling short to Iga Swiatek in the 2022 US Open final, Jabeur set up a 2023 Wimbledon final meeting against Marketa Vondrousova.
Considering that Jabeur had already been in two Grand Slam finals and that 24-year-old Vondrousova was playing in her maiden Slam final, many had the Tunisian as the favorite since she had already played in a Wimbledon final and had two Grand Slam finals on her resume.
But when the 2023 Wimbledon final started, Jabeur was evidently feeling enormous stress, tension, and pressure. After suffering a 4-6 4-6 loss to Vondrousova, Jabeur broke down in tears and looked absolutely heartbroken and devastated.
Jabeur: Had I won Wimbledon, I could have gone for a baby right away
“There was a personal thing going on there. I win that Wimbledon final, I could have a baby right away. And that dream faded. I was haunted by fear. After all I’m just a human being, what can I do more?” Jabeur said in her documentary titled “This Is Me.”
“It was the toughest loss of my career because emotionally it destroyed me, not only winning Wimbledon, but the idea of having a baby just vanished with the trophy of Wimbledon.”
Jabeur, ranked at No. 6 in the world, will aim for her first Grand Slam title at the upcoming Australian Open. So far, Jabeur hasn’t really had much success at Melbourne Park as reaching the Australian Open quarterfinal in 2020 remains her best result at the tournament.
It remains to be seen if Jabeur can achieve her dream of becoming a Grand Slam champion at this year’s Australian Open or any other Major. If that happens, Jabeur will feel enormous relief and probably try to go for a baby with her husband.
