Pigs in a Blanket – Easy Appetizer

Pigs in a blanket is probably the most adorable appetizer name of all time, right? The idea is simple; hot dogs (or other pork sausage) rolled in bread and baked.

Pigs in a blanket is like a hot dog with the bun baked on, or maybe like a more classy (and baked) corn dog. While I tend to think of pigs in a blanket as an easy appetizer idea, you could also easily modify this recipe to make this a meal idea instead.

Pigs in a blanket is also such a simple recipe with basically just two ingredients, but endless ways to customize to your preference. For example, you can easily swap the hot dogs for another meat (like an all-beef dog) or even vegetarian hot dogs.

You can add cheese or top these with fresh herbs or something fun like everything bagel seasoning.

Pigs in a Blanket Ingredients:

  • Hot dogs – or other sausages like: little smokies, turkey or beef dogs, or veggie dogs
  • Crescent roll dough – or you can use pizza crust dough (either can work well)
  • Butter – a little melted butter brushed on before baking makes these golden brown

Directions:

Cut the hot dogs into two bite-size pieces. I used little smokies here, so I cut them in half. If you are using standard size hot dogs, you may want to cut them into thirds.

Roll out the dough and cut each crescent triangle into two.

Roll the sausage up in the dough. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Brush the tops of the dough with a little melted butter and then bake at 375°F for 10-12 minutes until the crusts are golden brown.

Tips for Success:

  • Add seasoning to the tops after brushing with butter, like Everything Bagel Seasoning or sesame seeds.
  • Serve with any condiments you like for dipping, like ketchup and mustard.
  • If you use pizza dough instead of crescent roll dough, you will have to cut the dough a little differently. But just remember you only need a small triangle for each pig in a blanket.
