In an interview with Inside The Ropes, Mike Weir, Presidents Cup captain commented on the merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, and what it could mean for the future of the Presidents Cup. Weir hopes that this problem can be solved as soon as possible and that LIV Golfers can earn the right to play in this competition.
Cameron Smith is certainly the biggest star he needs.“I am anxious and hopeful that we hear something sooner rather than later. Hopefully, by the end of the year so I can formulate some things in my head of potential guys that can make the team.
I really can’t say until it is all finalised but if it is finalised, yes, I will definitely take a look at it and take a look at those guys. I will probably be having some conversations with them and hopefully their interest is high to play in it if that is a possibility.
There is still some uncertainty but, hopefully, by the end of the year we will start taking a look at those guys. Cam Smith in particular has been playing great. I know he has been playing great over there on LIV – he would be one of our horses for sure.”- he said, as quoted by golfmonthly.com!
Mike Weir and International team quality
Although many feel that his team lacks quality, given that they are missing key players, Weir believes that this team has character and the necessary strength.“This team is no joke, and I’m sick and tired of it being spoken of as a joke.
We love this event, and we love our team, and we cannot wait to run this back and have another shot”.
Adam Scott believes that the US team will have a difficult task next time. The international team has quality, as Scott says, and he hopes that some of the players will return at the next Presidents Cup.“This team’s got plenty of heart, and that’s thanks to everything Trevor’s put in in the last couple years,” Scott said.
“He’s bled for this (International team) shield that we now talk about, and it’s just the beginning for this team. I think you’re seeing a lot of guys here who will be returning on the next one. If they don’t, they will have tried their a** off to get on this team. I think the US team’s really going to be up for a helluva fight”.
