Scotland’s Euro 2024 qualifier at home to Georgia was suspended after less than ten minutes of play amid a downpour of torrential rain prior to kick-off.
Moments after Callum McGregor gave Steve Clarke’s men the lead the referee ordered both sets of players off the pitch with the soaked pitch having a clear impact on the path of the ball.
Rain teemed down on the Hampden Park turf earlier on Tuesday, however, it was decided play would start at the scheduled time of 7:45pm.
Both sets of players struggled to pass the ball around in the early stages with the rain clearly stunting its progress
But Scotland went in front after six minutes as McGregor reacted quickest when he fired a loose ball through the hands of Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili after the visitors failed to clear a John McGinn corner from the right.
A number of Georgia players, as well as manager Willy Sagnol pleaded with Vad to reconsider his stance and letting the game go on.
Vad then left the pitch to speak to UEFA officials before making his way back on and speaking to respective captains Andy Robertson and Guram Kashia. The referee then blew his whistle as he summoned all the players down the tunnel.
It’s hoped the match will continue later in the evening, however, Viaplay Sports reports the pitch failed the first inspection. Another one will be conducted at 8:35pm GMT.
Viaplay Sports also reports that if play is called off on Tuesday then the match could be replayed at St Mirren’s home, St Mirren Park, on Wednesday.
