Sheffield United in takeover talks with US Silicon Valley consortium

An American consortium of Silicon Valley-based private investors has held discussions about a takeover of Sheffield United following their promotion to the Premier League.

The group of capital fund investors is looking at various projects, including the purchase of the Yorkshire club owned by Prince Abdullah, who was locked in talks with Nigerian businessman Dozy Mmobuosi earlier this season over a £115 million sale.

According to a source close to the American consortium, the investors want to maintain their anonymity until it becomes necessary to reveal themselves, but talks with the club have taken place. They have also appointed an English-based technical advisor to liaise with the potential deal.

“They are a Silicon Valley-based capital investment fund looking at options, potentially in the Premier League,” said the source.

Sheffield United have returned to the top flight at the second attempt having finished runners-up in the Championship.

Before their promotion was sealed, they were subject to takeover interest from Mmobuosi. While talks have not led to a takeover, Mmobuosi showed his intent by spending more than £8 million during the campaign as part of the potential takeover process.

He told The Times last month in a statement that he was committed to a takeover, insisting: “I wish to state categorically that I have not withdrawn my bid to acquire Sheffield United Football Club.” Those close to that potential deal say relations between Mmobuosi and Prince Abdullah blew hot and cold.

Since those talks, Prince Abdullah has been on the Bramall Lane pitch celebrating a return to the Premier League under manager Paul Heckingbottom. The club are guaranteed £170 million, according to Deloitte, from broadcast money as well as parachute payments should they get relegated.

Should the new consortium be successful in gaining control of the club, they would add to the number of Premier League clubs under American ownership.

Chelsea were the latest to be taken over by owners from the United States, while Liverpool are owned by Fenway Sports Group, although the Glazer family are considering selling Manchester United.
