Sir Tyson Fury? Gyspy King says he would rather be named Emperor of the North than get a knighthood as heavyweight champion reveals pride in helping others

Tyson Fury is not interested in a knighthood, but he could be tempted if he were offered the title of ‘Emperor of the north’.

‘The Gypsy King’ was recently tipped for a knighthood by England and Manchester United’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney.

Rooney is a big fan of Fury and vice versa

“I think he’s the best we’ve seen in a long time, and I don’t think anyone will beat him,” Rooney told talkSPORT, as he was interviewed at ringside after Fury’s most recent victory over Derek Chisora.

“I think he’s an absolute legend for what he’s done for boxing. He’s entertaining, his skills are incredible, his mentality is incredible.

“If I’m being honest, I probably think he should be knighted because he hasn’t been afraid to go abroad, he’s won titles abroad, defended them abroad and he epitomises everything that boxing is.”

As for Fury, he wants an unique title rather than a knighthood, as he told The Telegraph: “A few sportspeople have it. Sir Mo Farah, Sir Steve Redgrave, Sir Lewis Hamilton, Sir Andy Murray.

“Well if all them people have had it, then I’d like something that no one else has had, especially a sportsperson. I’m a normal man but a limited edition, so I’d like something different.

“Maybe King Charles could make me the Emperor of the North of England.”

Since making his comeback to boxing in 2018, Fury has had as much to do outside of the boxing ring as inside it, becoming an advocate for raising awareness for mental health issues, having suffered himself.

In some cases, Fury has even found his work around mental health more rewarding than his extensive accolades that he has achieved in boxing.

“I mean this, honestly,” Fury said. “Going out on a Saturday night and getting paid to punch someone’s face in, winning and entertaining the crowd is one thing. That’s good. But saving somebody’s life, that can’t be bought.”

“I had a letter from another young girl, 17, two days ago,” Fury added. “She painted me a picture and she said she’s been self harming for the last six months but said she had taken my message of keeping going.

“So, it’s always a very special moment when people come up to me and say, you’ve saved my life or you’ve helped me with my mental health. I’m very very proud of that.”
