Southampton boss Nathan Jones labelled ‘stupid’ by Simon Jordan for his recent bizarre comments to the media with Saints embroiled in a relegation battle

Simon Jordan believes Southampton manager Nathan Jones was ‘stupid’ to make his series of peculiar comments to the media.

The Welshman has come under fire for what he said in his press conference after his side’s 3-0 defeat to Brentford.

Jones declared he was ‘one of the best managers in Europe last season’ whilst at Luton in what proved to be a bizarre outburst.

He also appeared to shift the blame onto his players, but he has since denied this, saying: “I was accepting responsibility for all the results.”

Speaking on the White and Jordan show, host Jim White claimed that Jones thought he was being ‘too honest’.

Former Crystal Palace chairman Jordan disagreed though, as he remarked: “No, I think he was stupid.

“You can describe stupidity and wrap it up as honesty and make yourself a useful idiot.

“Or, you can suggest that that conversation was something never needed to have with the media.

“There’s nothing wrong with the content of it [the conversation], it’s everything wrong with the method of delivery which is through the media.

“In the dressing room, tell your players precisely that and fix it.

“What he was basically doing was allowing a narrative to be built underneath this which could only have been one way, which is his blaming of the players and he lacks managerial nous to be able to make his own decisions.

“How can you think anything else? I don’t care what fit of peak you’re in.

“I don’t care how strong your reaction is to an individual performance when you stank the place out on Saturday.

“You have to remember that the media has the ability to be able to turn your world upside down, inside out if you don’t handle yourself properly.”

Southampton are rock bottom of the Premier League table with just four wins to their name all season.

Jones took the job in November after Ralph Hasenhuttl’s departure, but has so far failed to lift them out of the drop zone.

Times could get tougher for them in the coming weeks, with matches against Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham on the horizon.
