Ange on Kane transfer: “It’s going to happen”

Speaking at a press conference, Tottenham manage Ange Postecoglou said: “Fair to say I don’t have a blow by blow account but my understanding it’s progressed to the point where it’s going to happen. That gives us some clarity unless something unforeseen happens that we move forward without Harry.

“From my perspective it’s just about understanding where we are at and my information is the deal is imminent. Moving forward and with training today and looking to Brentford, we’re going without Harry.

“It’s best Harry speaks for himself but no doubt he’s one of the greats of the football club and that doesn’t change. It’s fairly evident that Harry Kane will always be one of the greats of this football club.”

The latest on Caicedo

Moises Caicedo still wants to join Chelsea despite Liverpool winning last night’s bidding war for the Brighton midfielder.

What is Pochettino saying?

Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino said he was “working hard” to bring in new signings but declined to comment on Moises Caicedo directly.

Speaking at a Chelsea press conferences, he said: “I never talk about players who don’t belong to us. We are working hard to add more players to the squad and if we have some update to make for you the club will do.

“At the moment I will not talk about players who do not play for us. Like any club, we are trying to add more quality to reinforce our squad With Paul, Laurence and the owners, the relationship is really good.

Addressing areas to reinforce in the Chelsea squad, Pochettino added: “It’s obvious when you look at the squad and when you compare to last season too many midfielders leave the squad. We are trying hard but being respectful. It is so important to be very respectful, it is the way I love to work and the way we need to work.”

Asked about the high-octane drama of this year’s transfer window, he said: “There appears a new market like Saudi Arabia, it is good for players and coaches also. I think when this type of situation appears it is important to improve and evolve.

“It looks like a drama but it is football. We need to enjoy what we are doing but of course, when money is there and involved, it sometimes looks like a drama. The players need to play with their talent and we need to be responsible to protect the talent to create a good spectacle for the fans.”

The Chelsea boss appeared to dangle a small carrot to fans hoping their team will finalise a deal for Caicedo, stating: “We are working really hard to try and finish the squad. The market doesn’t help to finish business before the start of the season. For every club it is like this. I am positve.”

What is Tuchel saying?

Thomas Tuchel has used a Bayern Munich press conference to stress that Harry Kane remains a Tottenham player, for the timebeing.

Asked about hinderances at the airport in the Kane transfer, Tuchel was wary of speculating. “You probably know more than I do where he actually is at this time and what he’s doing,” he said. “We are working on it, that’s what I can confirm and that is no secret. But as of now there’s no decision and as long as there is no agreement the coach is not going to talk about it because it’s not his player.”

Addressing hiccups in finalising the deal for the England captain, Tuchel said: “I’m talking with the people but I had the last practice ahead of that important game [against RB Leipzig in the DFL-Supercup tomorrow].

“But everyone is doing what he’s here for and I’m not getting into the final hours of a transfer. I’m not going to get involved in that. [Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen] is not involved in my final practice. Everybody has their duties.”

Asked whether Bayern will play in a different style tomorrow with the potential addition of Kane, he said: “That depends on who’s on the pitch. For a couple of weeks we have been working on our build up play and the way we want to do it.

“At this time, Kane is not one of our players, so we do not have to choose a tactic according to him.”

Asked whether Kane might still play tomorrow, he added: “The most important question is, is he our player, which he isn’t at this time. My job as coach is to focus on the players we have.”

Caicedo spurns Reds for Blues, reports claim

Moises Caicedo has told Liverpool he only wants to join Chelsea, it has been reported.

Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “Moisés Caicedo has just informed Liverpool that he only wants to join Chelsea!

“Caicedo has decided to keep his word and only accept Chelsea as personal terms were agreed since end of May.

“Chelsea, set to bid again in order to get deal done with Brighton.”

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth also tweeted: “One source claims Moises Caicedo has now rejected chance to join Liverpool. Awaiting confirmation from both clubs. Player’s preference is Chelsea. Chelsea yet to officially big back in.”

In other transfer news, Arsenal loan out academy star striker

It is not just Harry Kane and Moises Caicedo who are on the move this week. Arsenal youngster Charlie Patino has also found a new club: Swansea City.

The 19-year-old has joined the Championship side on a season-long loan. It was expected earlier this summer that Patino would leave on a permanent basis, so Arsenal supporters will be pleased to know that he will indeed be returning to the club next summer.

Patino is widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted youngsters to have emerged from Arsenal’s academy in recent years. He scored on his first-team debut for the club, against Sunderland in the League Cup, in December 2021.

Patino spent last season on loan at Blackpool, where he made 37 appearances in all competitions.

How much are Bayern paying for Kane?

There has been much speculation about the agreement between Tottenham and Bayern Munich, with different outlets reporting the deal is worth around £100m.

The Sun reported that Bayern have agreed a fee of £104m, Meanwhile Italian Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano has said Tottenham will recieve a fee of €100m (86,473,000) with add-ons of up to €20m (£17,292,800).

Romano tweeted: “Harry Kane to FC Bayern, here we go! Deal completed between all parties as Kane has given final green light.

“Tottenham to receive €100m fixed fee plus add-ons up to €20m package.

“Kane will sign a four year deal, he’ll fly to Germany today.”

Bayern board member: “We will have a team that has the chance to win in every competition”

Bayern have suggested that signing Kane will give them a shot at Champions League glory, Sky Sports journalist Adam Bate reported.

He tweeted: “In Munich. Asked Andreas Jung, Bayern board member, about Harry Kane: ‘It is the first time that we pay on that level for a player. For us, it is something special. It shows we are competitive with the others. We will have a team that has the chance to win in every competition.’”

Harry Kane will reportedly travel to Germany this afternoon

Harry Kane is due to leave on an afternoon flight to Munich for a medical, Daily Mail football writer Sami Mokbel reported.

Mokbel tweeted: “Harry Kane currently due to leave on an early afternoon flight to Munich. Was originally due to arrive this morning amid claims Tottenham are trying to renegotiate finer parts of the agreement with Bayern Munich. But told issues are close to being resolved.”

Klopp: “I was wrong” to criticise £100m transfers

Klopp was also asked about comments he made in 2016 that suggested he would never spend this much money on a player. The German manager has acknowledged his views have changed, suggesting these types of sums are the only way in which top clubs can compete.

“Everything changes. Do I like it? No But did I realise I was wrong? Definitely. It is not great but it is the way it goes.

“It will not change around again. Saudi Arabia will not help. We as a club have to try and make sure with our resources we get the best possible team together. We really try everything to bring together the best team or squad for us.

“That is the idea and we are not in dreamland and it is not we can just point at players and bring them in. There is a lot of work to do. Sometimes one door closes and the other opens up. If people want to throw my quotes from five or six years ago, absolutely no problem. That day it was what I thought.

Now I realise I was wrong. It’s easy to admit that.

Postecoglou and Tuchel due to speak today

This being the Friday before the start of the new top-flight season, most managers are holding press conferences today. We’ve already heard from Klopp, who was illuminatingly non-committal on Caicedo. Here’s the schedule for the rest of the day.

  • 12.30pm UK time – Thomas Tuchel, the Bayern Munich manager, speaks in Germany

  • 1pm UK time – Mauricio Pochettino, the new Chelsea manager, hosts his pre-match press conference

  • 1pm UK time – Ange Postecoglou, the new Spurs manager, speaks to the media

  • 1.30pm UK time – Roberto de Zerbi, the Brighton boss, has his say on the Caicedo situation

10:30 AM BST

Spurs have NOT banned Kane from travelling to Germany

Contrary to reports much earlier this morning, Tottenham have not banned Harry Kane from flying to Germany to complete his transfer to Bayern.

The club have given their permission for him to travel to Europe today, for a medical with the Bundesliga champions.

However, our understanding is that there could still be some changes made to the deal. It seems that Daniel Levy may yet put a twist in this tale.

Hamer time

Away from the two big transfers of the day, here’s more from elsewhere in the market.

Sheffield United have agreed a deal to sign Gustavo Hamer from Coventry in a deal worth £15 million. It will be Sheffield United’s biggest signing of summer so far.

The Dutchman is set for a medical and is not training today with Coventry.

10:11 AM BST

Klopp’s uncertainty

The Liverpool manager’s lack of finality on the Caicedo deal strongly suggests that this deal has hit a speedbump. Seems likely that the exact shape of this speedbump will become clear over the next few hours.

10:03 AM BST

Klopp confirms Caicedo arrangement

So while Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Liverpool have agreed an £111m deal for Moises Caicedo, personal terms have not yet been agreed with the Brighton player.

Klopp, speaking at his morning press conference, said: “I can confirm the deal that the club has agreed, I don’t know what it means exactly, the player and agreement we will see.

“What changes is we have not endless resources, we didn’t expect a couple of things happening, Hendo, Fab and then it happened and we give it a go and the club was really stretched. We will see in the end.

“I have told you what I know. Besides that we cannot share, don’t praise the day before the night. Let’s see what happens.”

It promises to be a fascinating day as the future of the in-demand Caicedo is fought out between the two Premier League big guns.

10:01 AM BST

Kane deal likely to have add-ons

The most likely scenario with Harry Kane’s move to Bayern is that Spurs get £86 million up front (that is the headline fee in the agreement between the clubs) but with add-ons that could earn the London club much closer – possibly in excess of – £100 million.

For a 30-year-old with a year left on his contract, that seems like a high fee. Many a slip between the cup and lip though.

09:40 AM BST

The interest in Caicedo ramped up in January…

…when he was the subject of multiple bids from Arsenal (all rejected) and put an open letter on Twitter explaining why he was so keen to leave the Amex Stadium.

“I am the youngest of 10 siblings from a poor upbringing in Santa Domingo in Ecuador,” Caicedo wrote. “My dream always to be the most decorated player in the history of Ecuador. I am proud to be able to bring in a record transfer fee for Brighton which would allow them to reinvest it and help the club continue to be successful.

“The fans have taken me into their hearts and they will always be in my heart so I hope they can understand why I want to take up this magnificent opportunity.”

Much changed since January – not least Arsenal dropping out of the running for Caicedo and turning their attention to Declan Rice instead. Into that gap stepped Chelsea, who have made multiple bids for the player this summer.

As recently as Sunday, Paul Barber, Brighton’s chief executive, said: “Moises had a slight hamstring injury late in training and was pulled out [of the friendly against Rayo Vallecano] for that reason. With a Premier League season just a week away it makes no sense to risk him today.

“We’re looking forward to Moises starting the season with us, he’s a Brighton player under a long-term contract.

“ He’s probably one of the most exciting young midfield players in the world at the moment and we’re delighted to have him.”

09:12 AM BST

Caicedo could undergo medical today

Brighton’s Ecuadorian midfielder could travel to Merseyside for a medical today, but the finalisation of any move is still dependent on the Ecuadorian agreeing personal terms. That appears to be the reason he has not yet signed on the bottom line, an it is well known that he wants to join Chelsea.

We reported last month that Chelsea would be prepared to allow a number of other players to join Brighton as part of a deal to sign Caicedo, possibly including England international Conor Gallagher.

When those conversations were taking place, Chelsea’s understanding was that personal terms would not be an issue with a move to Stamford Bridge.

Incidentally, Bayern Munich had also shown an interest in Caicedo earlier this summer.

09:07 AM BST

How the Kane knot began to untie

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is believed to value Kane closer to £120 million – considerably more than the £86 million that has been agreed between the clubs – but the risk of the club’s star asset departing for free in under a year has underscored negotiations with Bayern.

The key to the deal appears to be the German club having re-organised their offer so that Spurs receive a far greater amount of money up-front, with fewer add-ons and staggered payments, so they can invest in their squad immediately.

An early update from Matt Law this morning

Caicedo fee agreed with Liverpool is actually £111 million

That’s obviously a huge new British transfer record. The current record is Enzo Fernandez, who cost Chelsea £106 million in January from Benfica. Declan Rice’s £105 million transfer from West Ham to Arsenal is also somewhere close to the top of that tree.

08:44 AM BST

What happened overnight

Friday looks set to be a dramatic day in the transfer market as two huge deals come to a head. (It’s also the first day of the Premier League season, but that seems like a sideshow at the moment).

Overnight it was reported that Harry Kane has agreed personal terms to join Bayern Munich. That came after yesterday’s developments, in which a deal between the clubs was apparently agreed. It is important to understand, however, that the transfer between the clubs has not yet been completed. Kane is due to fly to Germany today.

Meanwhile, Moises Caicedo, Brighton’s defensive midfielder, is the subject of a tug-of-war between Liverpool and Chelsea. All summer it has looked like the London club were front-runners for his signature, but yesterday Telegraph Sport broke the news that Liverpool had outbid Chelsea. Overnight, an agreement was reached between Liverpool and Brighton, for a fee of about £110 million, which would be a new British transfer record.

However, as with Kane, a final deal is yet to be signed and it is widely known that Caicedo wants to join Chelsea.

Stay with us this morning for the latest news from both deals, plus the rest of the goings on from the transfer market.
