The Arsenal XI has zero players who cost more than £50million unlike Premier League rivals, with Chelsea set to break spending record for Enzo Fernandez

Arsenal may be Premier League leaders, but the cost of their go-to starting XI is fairly low compared to their rivals.

The Gunners had splashed the cash more than any other side in England’s top flight in 2021, spending big to bring in stars, including Ben White, Martin Odegaard, Aaron Ramsdale and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Fast forward to the end of 2022, though, and Mikel Arteta’s side were ranked ninth in terms of expenditure, paying £118.86million for transfers including Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

That type of money is hardly peanuts but contrary to what would fans would think given their status as Premier League leaders, their drop in transfer spending is reflected in the team that’s got them sitting at the top of the table.

Favoured right-back White was the Gunners’ most expensive signing in the 2021 summer window, recruiting him from Brighton for £50m.

But the England international aside, Arsenal boast a talented squad that all cost below that price.

So how much did each of the Gunners’ XI cost and how do their fees compare to their top six rivals we hear you ask?

Arsenal

Starting with the Gunners’ attack, star winger Bukayo Saka has been at the club since the age of seven when he signed as a youngster from Watford.

But whilst Arsenal’s other two main attackers saw the north London outfit have to reach into their pockets, they only paid £6m for Gabriel Martinelli, whilst Gabriel Jesus cost £45m.

In midfield, Granit Xhaka and now-captain Martin Odegaard both cost £30m respectively, whilst Thomas Partey set them back £45m.

Arsenal’s back line all cost below £50m, too, with £25m spent on Kieran Tierney, £23m on Gabriel, £27m on William Saliba and £24m on first choice goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Now with target Mykhailo Mudryk looking like costing too much, they could move on to alternatives. It is thought Shakthar want a fee for their attacker in the same bracket as Jack Grealish and Antony.

Manchester City

Despite the arrival of superstar striker Erling Haaland in the summer, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City had the sixth highest Premier League spend in the summer window.

But despite not breaking the bank so far this season, their starting XI boasts plenty of stars costing over £50m.

Unsurprisingly, Haaland cost Man City a pretty penny, with the initial fee being £51m which could rise to £85.5m in total when agent fees, signing bonus and other costs were taken into account.

Although not always guaranteed a start in Pep Guardiola’s team, Jack Grealish cost £100m when he signed from Aston Villa in 2021. Meanwhile, Kevin De Bruyne signed for £55m in 2015.

Newcastle

Following their big money takeover in 2020, it would be no surprise if Newcastle would boast players worth more than £50m.

They were the eighth highest spenders in the 2022 transfer window, though, signing Nick Pope for £10m and other stars arriving for a similarly modest fee previously.

But Eddie Howe’s side does have a star that saw the Magpies part with more than £50m.

Although currently out injured, summer signing Alexander Isak cost the Magpies £58m – a club-record fee.

Manchester United

Erik ten Hag was tasked with rebuilding Manchester United’s squad when he arrived this summer, and their £214million spend in the window means they boast a number of big money stars.

Brazilian winger Antony arrived at Old Trafford for £88million at the start of the season.

Meanwhile, former Real Madrid star Casemiro saw the Red Devils part with £70m.

2022 World Cup winner with Argentina Lisandro Martinez also surpassed the £50m mark when he signed from Ten Hag’s former club Ajax, Man United paying £56.7m.

Tottenham

Although Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is criticised by fans for being reluctant to spend big on transfers, Antonio Conte’s squad still boasts a player that cost more than any of their north London rivals.

That player was also the club’s most expensive summer signing, former Everton star Richarlison, who joined Spurs for £60m.

Meanwhile, Spurs recruited regular Ivan Perisic on a free in the summer. Yves Bissouma set them back half of White’s cost at £25m in the last window, too.

Liverpool

The Reds’ latest addition to their squad is set to cost just under the £50million mark, with Netherlands star Cody Gakpo signing for a fee that could rise up to £47m.

In 2017, fan favourite Mohamed Salah signed for Liverpool for a then-club record transfer of £36.9m, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for £35m from Arsenal.

But the Reds do have summer signing Darwin Nunez, who cost over the £50mmark having signed from Benfica for £64m.

Players such as Virgil van Dijk and Alisson cost over Ben White’s fee too, signing for £75m and £67m respectively.

Chelsea

The Blues were the Premier League’s biggest spenders in the summer of 2022.

Although their league position may not show it, since Todd Boehly took ownership of Chelsea, the club have spent close to £300m – so it’s no surprise their squad boasts stars costing over £50m.

Wesley Fofana signed from Leicester for £80m, whilst Marc Cucurella joined for £62m from Brighton.

Now, they look set to bring in Argentina star Enzo Fernandez for more than double White’s fee – a reported £112million.
