The John Deere Classic betting preview

Traditionally the last PGA Tour event before the Open Championship, the John Deere Classic is, since the addition of the Scottish Open to the schedule, now positioned in front of the circuit’s two weeks spent on the British seaside.

With most of the stars of the game resting up for that fortnight – which includes the last major of the year, of course – the tournament offers a big chance to the lesser lights of the tour on a course that is a lot of fun.

TPC Deere Run is a well-established venue and one which Steve Stricker once ruled.

He was, in fact, unbeatable between 2009 and 2011, lifting the trophy three times in a row.

In itself, that hat trick provides us with a big clue about what’s needed this week because Stricker was superb when hitting approaches in 75-150 yard range and capable of going low when the flat stick was hot.

The John Deere Classic betting tips

Adam Schenk each way

The 31-year-old American Adam Schenk has enjoyed a fine 2023, finishing second at both Innisbrook and Colonial.

Those results bode well for this week because they are both tests that past Deere Run winners have excelled at.

In more recent weeks he has finished seventh among a high-class field at Muirfield Village and then again last week in Detroit.

He’s also got a fourth and a sixth in previous starts in this tournament.

Russell Henley top 20

The numbers for this play are persuasive because ever since the Players’ Championship Russell Henley has been in superb form.

In fact, he has eight top 20 finishes in his last nine starts – and every single one of those fields was superior in quality and depth to this week’s

He also has excellent course form with two of his three visits reaping top 20s: he was second in 2019 and 11th last year (even in the exception, 2014, he was 27th).

Emiliano Grillo each way

The Argentinian Emiliano Grillo has always been a flusher from the tee, he’s just sometimes not holed as many putts as he would have liked.

In fact, he has almost always been well outside the top 100 in the Strokes Gained Putting rankings and, while moving up to 89th this year does not make him an elite putter, it has helped him over the winning line.

He landed that second PGA Tour win at Colonial in late May, one of five top 25 finishes in his last six regular PGA Tour starts.

Now he returns to a course he has played just once in the past but which holds good memories for him.

He was second last year carding rounds of 68-64–65-69 and in his current form is up to repeating that and hopefully going one better.
