Nick Kyrgios and Emma Raducanu have something in common… they’re both Tottenham fans.
Raducanu is an adopted Spurs fan because of her fitness trainer and Kyrgios also has an unconventional reason for loving the north London club.
The Australian tennis star was pictured wearing a Tottenham shirt while practising at Wimbledon in 2017.
He opened up on the reason behind his affinity with the club in an interview with Men’s Health magazine.
“It’s a funny story — you’ll like this,” he said.
“I play computer games a lot and I used to like Emmanuel Adebayor on FIFA. At the time, he played for Spurs, so I supported them and have never changed.”
Playing FIFA has been something of an issue for him over the years while playing on the ATP tour.
He once admonished himself in an on court tirade for playing the popular video game into the early hours.
“So lazy, do something, so lazy you are,” he muttered to himself at Queen’s in 2019. “You were playing FIFA until 3am, what do you expect?”
Kyrgios can probably emphasise with Tottenham, too, on their trophy struggles, with the Australian still searching for a Grand Slam singles title.
He came close in 2022, losing to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. Spurs know a thing or two about losing in big finals in recent years… see Champions League and League Cup finals.
However, Kyrgios insists he will not feel unfulfilled if he finishes his career without a Slam.
“Not at all,” he said. “I have had that conversation with myself and it’s a tough one to have. Every day since I came on the scene, everyone in the sport has had an opinion about me.
“’He’s one of the most talented players… will he ever fulfil his potential… will he this, will he that?’
“If you allow their expectations to influence you, you can feel a failure.
“But I can look back and I’ve achieved some pretty cool things.
“I’ve achieved a lot, been on an amazing journey.”
