Daniil Medvedev responded to a critic after being told to “have more class” and also to “grow up.” On Saturday, Medvedev defeated Alex de Minaur 7-6 (3) 6-3 in the Beijing round-of-16. On a match point, Medvedev nearly hit de Minaur with his volley but the ball missed the Australian and the Russian instantly apologized.
In the comment section of Tennis TV’s Instagram post, one person wrote: “Hard volley to the body completely unnecessary, this guy need some more class, and to grow up also.” Responding to the comment, Medvedev wrote: “@renatopozo you really have some problems, right?” Medvedev also added three laughing emojis to his comment.
Medvedev praises de Minaur
In the first set, Medvedev was up by a double-break and had a 5-2 lead when he stunningly dropped the lead and the first set went into a tie-break. Luckily for Medvedev, he was able to keep his focus and win five consecutive points from 2-3 down in the tie-break to still win the first set.
After winning the first set, Medvedev broke de Minaur in the fourth game of the second set and then held on to his service for the remainder of the match to complete a two-set win. Now, Medvedev owns a 6-2 head-to-head against de Minaur.
“[It was] tough, tough like always. Alex has this ability, everyone knows it that when he’s down, he starts to play better. That’s what happened today. First set, I didn’t manage to count him down, as he was playing better because he was down.
Second set I managed to play just unbelievable. It’s crazy how every time he is down in a match, you know he is going to start playing like he is No 1 in the world. Tough to play against him, a tough victory, but I am happy with my level,” Medvedev said after beating de Minaur.
