Winter Haven (Italian: Porto d’Inverno) is a city located in Polk County, Florida, (United States). The city had a population of 26,487 at the 2000 census, and the US Census Bureau estimated the population at 32,577 in 2007, making it the second most populous city in Polk County.

Winter Haven is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven metropolitan area. The first settlements in the area date back to 1860, in 1885 the first commercial activity opened there and the area was called Harris Corners, Harris was the name of the owner of the first shop.

The following year, the name Winter Haven was proposed due to the area’s pleasant climate. By the end of the century the population grew to about 400 people and in 1911 the town acquired administrative autonomy. Florida’s first building boom, dating back to the 1920s, caused a dramatic increase in population.

The event that brought further growth to the town was the opening of the Cypress Gardens theme park (1936) which transformed Winter Haven into a tourist resort . Until 2009, the year in which it was closed, it remained the main attraction of the city; after its closure, the area was purchased by Merlin Entertainments which on October 15, 2011 opened Legoland Florida, the second LEGO theme park in the United States.
