Andy Murray dethrones Novak Djokovic in Toronto

Top-10 stars Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray battled in the 2008 Canada Masters quarter-final in Toronto. Andy dethroned Novak 6-3, 7-6 in an hour and 45 minutes, advancing to the semi-final clash against an in-form Rafael Nadal.

Murray grabbed 11 points more than Djokovic, giving his best to draw the most after serving at only 41%! Andy performed well behind the second serve. He defended three out of five break chances while delivering three breaks to leave Novak behind and beat him for the first time in five matches on the ATP Tour.

Djokovic hit more winners and forced and unforced mistakes. The Serb lost the ground in the shortest rallies up to four strokes, failing to erase that deficit in the more extended ones where he had the upper hand.

Novak squandered a break chance in the encounter’s opening game, and Andy brought it home with a backhand down the line winner.

The Briton created three break chances in game two with a running forehand winner at the net. He seized the second after the Serb’s basic forehand mistake to cement the advantage and gain a boost. Murray erased another break chance with a winner in the third game and held at love in game five for a 4-1 lead.

Serving for the set at 5-3, Andy fired a service winner to bring the opener home and boost his chances ahead of the second set.Novak sprayed a volley error at the net to drop serve at the beginning of the set. Djokovic pulled it back in the next one and kept fighting.

The Serb secured the third game with a forehand winner before the Briton stole his serve at 2-2 after Novak’s loose forehand. Djokovic denied a break point at 2-4 with a smash winner to stay within one break deficit and pulled the break back in the next one to lock the result at 4-4.

Novak defended a break point in game nine and earned a set point a few minutes later. Murray stayed calm and erased it after Djoovic’s forehand mistake. Both players served well in games 11 and 12 to introduce a tie break, and Andy forced Novak’s mistake to forge a 3-1 advantage.

The Briton claimed the following two points to extend the advantage before taking the breaker 7-3 following the Serb’s volley error in the tenth point.
