The Players Championship, a famous golf tournament on the Pga Tour, started on March 7. It is a tournament with history, and it has been held since 1974. This competition is often referred to as the ‘fifth major’ by many people.
Golf fans have finally welcomed this tournament and they have their favorite. What makes many people regret is the fact that a number of players will not be taking part in the event, because they have lost their right to compete as a result of joining Liv Golf.
Among them are Cameron Smith, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, to name just a few. In an interview with GOLF.com, Cameron Smith talked about this tournament where he will not be able to defend the crown. He did not rule out the option of appearing at the tournament as a fan.
“I’m a little bit unsure you know? That’s where I live now so, I don’t know. I’ll definitely be watching on TV. I think it’s a great event to watch. I grew up my whole childhood watching the event and yeah, I’d love to get out there.
I don’t know how it would be received but even getting out there and watching, walking around in the crowd might be pretty funny”.
Nick Dougherty reacted
Sky Sports pundit Nick Dougherty is disappointed by the whole situation, especially by the absence of Cameron Smith, who would certainly be one of the favorites had he been available “There are not many players on LIV that I think the tournament misses, in terms of the impact they would have, but Smith is definitely one of them.
The fact that he should be defending is a miss and it’s a real shame. One of the reasons guys love winning majors is because they knew they had beaten all the best players in the game That’s usually the case at The Players and it won’t be this time around, because there’s no Smith, there’s no DJ (Dustin Johnson) and there’s a couple of other contenders missing too.”- he said, as quoted by mirror.co.uk
