Portugal were one of just three sides, along with France and Brazil, to have booked their spot in the second round with a game to spare, having won their opening two games against Ghana and Uruguay.
Fernando Santos’ side need just a point to guarantee themselves a first place finish in the group, but even a loss would likely be enough provided Ghana don’t overhaul a three goal swing in a win against Uruguay.
South Korea, who are managed by former Portugal international and manager Paulo Bento, face an uphill battle to make it into the last 16 for just the third time in their history after their 3-2 defeat to Ghana in their last game.
Bento will not be on the touchline for Friday’s big clash though, having been sent off after the final whistle of their last game.
The defeat on Monday, coupled with their 0-0 draw with Uruguay on the opening day has left the Taegeuk Warriors needing to beat the former European champions and hope the other result goes their way in order to qualify.
A win for Ghana against Uruguay would eliminate South Korea regardless of if they beat Portugal or not, though a draw would mean would likely require the Asian side to win by two clear goals on Friday afternoon.
If Uruguay were to beat Ghana by two more goals than South Korea beat Portugal, then the South American side would leapfrog Bento’s team despite also picking up a win, though a win by an equal or amount or one goal fewer should be enough for the South Koreans.
