Burnley lift Championship trophy as Vincent Kompany explains ‘pragmatic’ reason behind contract extension

There were jubilant scenes at Turf Moor as Burnley lifted the Championship trophy, finishing the season on a whopping 101 points.

The Clarets were relegated from the Premier League last term but are back at the first time of asking, signing off their stellar season with a 3-0 win over Cardiff City.

They blew the rest of the competition away, led by Vincent Kompany in his first season in charge of a club in England.

Under the Belgian, Burnley have switched their style to a more attractive brand of football and it has worked wonders as they scored the most goals (87) and conceded the least (35) in the division, finishing ten points ahead of nearest challengers Sheffield United.

Their heroics have led to talk that Kompany could leave for another job with Tottenham, Chelsea and West Ham all reported to have been interested.

But the ex-Manchester City defender put that speculation to bed by signing a new five-year contract.

“I still had three or four years left and it’s not something I went chasing but there is a pragmatic reason for signing the new deal,” said Kompany.

“For my pathway, this is the right decision, but it helps when we try and recruit players.

“When I’m trying to convince a player to come here it’s easier just after I have signed a new deal.

“We have had a massive advantage planning for next season, because we have known about promotion of a long time.

“But we were going to lose that if people were waiting for me to come out with a statement.”

Burnley celebrated their Championship title in style on Monday afternoon in front of their own fans. With the Turf Moor crowd already in party mode, the Clarets put on a show.

They inflicted a 3-0 win over Cardiff with goals from Josh Brownhill, Ashley Barnes and Scott Twine.

That victory saw Burnley reach 101 points, the first time a team has made over 100 points in the division since Leicester in 2014.

The Lancashire outfit have dominated the Championship throughout the season, losing just once in their last 26 league matches and just three times overall.

“We faced doubt at the beginning of this season and it will be the same next season,” said Kompany.

“It’s for us to use that to rally around. It starts now. The goal for me next year is to make our fans proud and have a bit of fun in the Premier League.”
