Todd Boehly was in a bullish mood.

“Chelsea’s going to win 3-0!” the optimistic owner told Sky Sports a few hours before the Blues faced Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

As it turned out, Boehly’s prediction of a 3-0 scoreline almost proved correct. The problem was Real Madrid were the victors, not Chelsea.

A 2-0 defeat has left Frank Lampard’s side with it all to do at Stamford Bridge in the return game on Tuesday. Yet while Madrid are now the strong favourites to advance to the semis, things could be much worse for Chelsea.

Not only were they outplayed by the reigning European champions, the visitors to the Spanish capital had to play with 10 men for more than half an hour. In that light, a 2-0 loss was not an awful result.

The tie is just about still alive and that will have implications for how Chelsea approach Saturday’s meeting with Brighton.

The Blues have nothing left to play for in the Premier League, so we could see Lampard rest some of the players who are dead certs to be in the starting XI against Madrid in midweek.

Brighton are simply a better team than Chelsea this season, and their chances of victory will be further boosted if Lampard does shuffle his pack.

The Seagulls remain in the mix for a top-six finish and a win here would get them back on track after defeat by Tottenham Hotspur last time out.

Chelsea’s focus will be elsewhere as they prepare for Real Madrid’s visit on Tuesday, so Brighton can compound their Premier League woes.

Every club in the Premier League has bemoaned refereeing decisions against them this season. In many cases, it is simply a diversion tactic or an overreaction.

But Brighton have genuine cause for grievance. Several calls went against them in the loss to Spurs last weekend, including the mystifying decision to not award Roberto De Zerbi’s side a penalty after Karou Mitoma was felled in the box.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) issued an apology to Brighton after the match – and it was not the first time this term they have admitted a mistake which went against the south coast side.

Brighton were very unfortunate to suffer defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They were the better team on the balance of play, with both the shot count and the expected goals in their favour.

If De Zerbi’s charges produce a similar showing at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, there is no reason why they cannot emerge triumphant.

Remember, Brighton have amassed seven more points than their upcoming opponents despite having played two games fewer.

They are not as big a name as Chelsea, but the Seagulls are a superior team right now. Chelsea are on a five-game winless streak and their woes could be compounded this weekend.

Consider a predicted starting XI against Chelsea. It could feasibly contain players signed from Independiente del Valle (Moises Caicedo), Bohemians (Evan Ferguson), Argentinos Juniors (Alexis Mac Allister) and Kawasaki Frontale (Mitoma). You will not find a more eclectic squad in England’s top tier.

Mitoma in particular has been a revelation this term.

Loaned out to Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium last season, the Japanese forward only made his first Premier League start in late October. He featured from the first whistle just twice before the World Cup.

Post-Qatar, though, he has been one of the outstanding attackers in the division. He has scored eight goals since the resumption of domestic football, and is his team’s leading scorer from open play.

Vinicius Junior had plenty of joy down the left against Chelsea and Mitoma, who operates on that flank, could also cause the Blues problems on Saturday.
