Chelsea vs Crystal Palace predictions

When it rains, it pours.

On the balance of play on Thursday, Chelsea were good value for at least a draw against Fulham. Yet the fine margins went against them and Graham Potter was left to contemplate a 2-1 defeat.

The under-fire Chelsea boss must be wondering if his luck will ever turn. His team were on top and looking to take the lead when debutant forward Joao Felix was sent off just before the hour mark.

That left the Blues up against it. Soon after, Carlos Vinicius’s header won the match for Fulham and left Potter in a precarious position.

Up until recently, the powers that be at Stamford Bridge insisted they had faith in Potter’s long-term vision for the club. But another defeat this weekend could force Todd Boehly’s hand.

Crystal Palace are not in great form themselves, but there is enough quality within their ranks to take advantage of what could quickly become a toxic atmosphere in west London.

This could be another frustrating afternoon for 10th-placed Chelsea.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace betting tips

Chelsea’s confidence is on the floor right now and Crystal Palace have what it takes to make this a difficult match for the Blues.

Draw or Crystal Palace – 23/20 (bet365)

Nothing is going right for Chelsea at the moment. A run of one win in their last eight matches has left Potter’s side 10 points adrift of the top four, and out of the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.

The Blues are still in the Champions League – they will face Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16 – but this looks set to go down as one of their worst seasons in the last two decades.

There is still time to salvage something from the 2022/23 campaign, even if Chelsea are unlikely to overturn their sizable deficit to the top four.

But Chelsea rank 10th for goals scored this season and they have kept just one clean sheet in their last eight Premier League games.

With problems at both end of the pitch, things could get worse before they get better for the Blues.

Frustration has also been mounting at Selhurst Park. Patrick Vieira’s side have suffered two hefty defeats in the top flight since the World Cup, going down 3-0 to Fulham and 4-0 to Tottenham Hotspur – both on home turf.

Palace also lost in front of their own fans in the FA Cup, as Southampton won 2-1 at Selhurst last weekend.

But with Chelsea struggling immensely, the odds on a draw or away win are attractive.

Both teams to score – 19/20 (bet365)

After 19 games last season, Chelsea had scored 42 goals under Thomas Tuchel. To match that tally at the midway point of the current campaign, they would need to find the net 21 times against Palace.

Needless to say, that will not happen. Felix looked bright in his first 58 minutes as Chelsea player, but his red card at Craven Cottage means the Blues will have to make do without the player who was their main attacking threat on Thursday night.

Chelsea should still have enough about them to score. Palace have looked defensively suspect of late, notwithstanding a 2-0 victory over out-of-form Bournemouth.

Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi are excellent centre-backs for a mid-table team, but Palace have nevertheless struggled to keep opposition attacks quiet.

And for all Chelsea’s problems going forward, the only two home games they have failed to score in were against Arsenal and Manchester City.

Equally, though, Palace will fancy their chances of causing problems for a backline that has looked anything but convincing of late.

Vieira has yet to settle on a favoured attacking configuration, with Wilfried Zaha, Jordan Ayew, Odsonne Edouard and Jean-Philippe Mateta all deployed centrally at different times.

But with Zaha, Michael Olise and Ebere Eze all likely to start, Palace will not be short of quality in the final third.

Second half more goals – 21/20 (bet365)

Chelsea will aim to make a quick start here, but that is hard to do when confidence is so low.

Palace will be content to keep things tight in the opening stages. By breaking up Chelsea’s rhythm and making life difficult for the home team, they will look to unsettle the Stamford Bridge crowd.

Chelsea’s away following once again sung Tuchel’s name at Craven Cottage. Although direct, widespread criticism of Potter is unlikely, it is fair to say the club and the fans are not entirely aligned right now.

Chelsea have been slow to get going for most of the season. They are one of only seven Premier League teams whose first-half goal return is in single digits.

Palace have only scored once after half-time away from home this term, but the nature of Sunday’s encounter means we nevertheless fancy more goals to be scored after the break.

Chelsea could become desperate as the clock ticks down on and the match is likely to become increasingly stretched the later it gets.
