Chelsea ‘won’ January transfer window despite huge fee on Enzo Fernandez, but Arsenal hailed for getting ‘best signing’ Leandro Trossard and ‘bargain’ Jorginho

Darren Bent has hailed Arsenal over their January signings – but insisted that their London rivals, Chelsea, were the winners of the window.

The Blues forked out over £300million last month on eight transfers as owner Todd Boehly continued to flex his financial muscle.

Midfielder Enzo Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica on a British record fee of £106.8m rising to a potential £115m.

Winger Mykhailo Mudryk was also signed for £88m, along with Noni Madueke [35m], Benoit Badiashile [£33.7m], Malo Gusto [£26m], Andrey Santos [£11m], David Datro Fofana [£10m] and Joao Felix [£9.7m loan fee].

Giving his take on the winter transfer window, former Tottenham striker Bent picked his winners at who made the best dealings.

Speaking on talkSPORT Drive, Bent was asked by host Andy Goldstein at who the best signing of the window was.

To which the Arsenal fan said: “Signing of the window is a difficult one, because so many clubs have made signings.

“But the one for me that makes sense, I like Trossard at Arsenal. If you think about the signing, good player – very good player, exceptional.”

Though Bent stressed that Weston McKennie is another contender after Leeds signed the American midfielder on an initial loan from Juventus.

He remarked: “I’ve gone for Trossard, it makes sense, good signing, but do you know who was close? Weston McKennie for Leeds.

“I like what Leeds are doing with that signing, because he plays next to Tyler Adams for the USA as well, you saw how well they did against England at the World Cup, good energy.

“I nearly opted for him, but no I’ve gone for Leandro Trossard.”

As for the player that was the most overspent on, Bent opted for Fernandez, purely due to his record move.

He said: “The only one that springs to mind, and I know he hasn’t kicked a ball yet, but Enzo Fernandez.

“I’ve got no doubts he’s a good player. We saw it at the World Cup, he’s very good, but really to break the British transfer record? No, I think he’s a good player, but I can’t justify the £115million.”

Moving onto the best bargain of January, Bent declared that Jorginho’s switch from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates is his choice.

Knowing Goldstein wouldn’t approve, he said: “I know you’re going to hammer me for this, Jorginho, £12million.”

Goldstein replied: “That is ridiculously cheap.”

Leading Bent to say: “For someone who is that experienced, what Arsenal needed, a proven winner, £12million, I’d go for him for best bargain.”

But despite giving Arsenal awards in two categories while questioning Fernandez’s price tag, it was Chelsea who he insisted were the winners of January.

After naming Everton as his biggest losers, Bent said: “It has to be Chelsea, has to be Chelsea.

“Over £300m spent, but it’s good players they’ve brought in.”
