Spain booked their place in their second consecutive Nations League final on Thursday night after beating European champions Italy in Enschede through a late goal by substitute Joselu.
Luis de la Fuente’s side had taken the lead early after Yeremy Pino capitalised in a mistake by Leonardo Bonucci before Ciro Immobile equalised from the penalty spot soon after.
La Roja fell to defeat in their last Nations League final, losing 2-1 to France despite being a goal up, and will be desperate to get their hands on the Nations League trophy for the first time.
Victory would also mean the new manager lifting the first trophy available to him, having only taken over at the start of this year following Luis Enrique’s departure after a disappointing round of 16 exit to Morocco at the World Cup in Qatar last December.
Spain qualified for this week’s Finals by finishing top of their Nations League group containing Portugal, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, in which they scored an 88th minute winner away at Portugal in the last game to win the group.
Croatia will head into Sunday night’s final at the home of Feyenoord as underdogs, but it’s a title that they’re very much used to and have thrived off over the last five years.
Zlatko Dalic’s side unexpectedly reached the final of the 2018 World Cup, and followed it up with a third place finish in Qatar six months ago.
Victory on Sunday would be the country’s first ever competitive trophy and could prove the perfect send off for the side’s golden generation of talent, with captain and leader Luka Modric turning 38 in September.
Croatia surprised many by finishing top of their Nations League group which contained the then world champions France, as well as Austria and Denmark, securing a first place finish on the final matchday with a commanding 3-1 win in Vienna.
The Croats also deserved their victory on Wednesday in the semi final over Finals hosts the Netherlands, prevailing 4-2 in extra time.
The Dutch side took the lead in the first half but goals from Andrej Kramaric and Mario Pasalic turned the game around before the Netherlands scored a 96th minute equaliser to take the match to extra time.
Bruno Petkovic and Modric found the back of the net in a dominant extra time period for the away side, taking them to their first ever Nations League final.
Spain lead the head to head between the two countries 5-3 after nine games, the most recent meeting being an absolute thriller in Copenhagen the round of 16 at Euro 2020.
Croatia scored two goals in the last five minutes to make the score 3-3 and take the tie to extra time, before the Spaniards struck twice more to give them a 5-3 victory after 120 minutes.
