2014 Australian Open semifinalist Andrea Petkovic is applauding Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner for making “a sacrifice” for their respective countries and coming to play the Davis Cup Final 8. After Djokovic and Sinner met in the ATP Finals final in Turin, they went straight to Malaga for the Davis Cup Final 8.

Djokovic and Sinner met again in Malaga as the Italian beat the Serb en route to helping Italy secure a semifinal win over Serbia. Playing the Davis Cup Final 8 straight after the ATP Finals certainly wasn’t easy from the physical or mental aspect.

But Djokovic and Sinner didn’t want to complain and instead did their absolute best in Malaga.

Petkovic praises Djokovic, Sinner

“I think this we have to stress as much as we can, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic being there for their country this late in the year after having played so much, and I’m sure both of them want to make a splash at winning the Australian Open, is incredible.

It just comes to show you how important it is for these players that they are really sacrificing a piece of their recovery time in order to be there for their country. You could see it in both their faces how much they were playing and how much they wanted to win.

Both Novak, who has won literally everything there is to win, and Jannik, both of them just were so determined in this third set to hang in there. It was such a good match it was really good;” Petkovic said on the Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast.

After Sinner beat Djokovic in a singles match and then in the deciding doubles match, he also helped Italy secure a win in the final against Australia. In the Davis Cup final, Italy had a 1-0 lead over Australia before Sinner dismantled Alex de Minaur to seal Italy’s win and their first Davis Cup title since 1976.
