Former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Nuri Sahin protects referee from his own players as Antalyaspor ‘demand’ VAR recordings after controversial late offside against Fenerbahce is ‘made up’

Former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Nuri Sahin was seen protecting the match officials from his Antalyaspor players after their 2-1 loss to Fenerbahce.

The ex-Turkey international, who also played for Liverpool and Real Madrid, is currently coaching in the Turkish Super Lig, and was denied a big result.

Having gone a goal up against the Istanbul giants, a quick-fire double from Michy Batshuayi swung the match before Antalyaspor thought they’d equalised in the 11th minute of added time.

However, the goal from former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fernando was ruled out for offside by VAR, leaving the home team seething.

And when the full-time whistle eventually came, Sahin ran on the pitch to protect referee Kadir Saglam and his fellow officials in sensational scenes.

It wasn’t just the Antalya players that were livid, as the club later released a statement demanding audio recordings from the league.

In a statement titled ‘Dark Night’ and signed by the board of directors, the club called Saglam a ‘novice referee’ and accused him of ‘making up penalties’ in previous matches.

It read: “In today’s match, the same referee who assisted Fenerbahce’s first goal, sought the penalty and made up the offside, despite being stopped by a foul while attacking.
