Graeme Souness has said Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is ‘past his sell-by date’ after a howler in a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa.
Spurs captain Lloris was at fault for Emi Buendia’s opener when he failed to hold onto a long-range Douglas Luiz shot, allowing Ollie Watkins to collect the ball and provide an assist.
It proved to be yet another occasion this season where Spurs conceded the first goal of the game, but this time they didn’t come back, with Luiz later doubling the score.
Fans reacted angrily at full-time with boos, while chairman Daniel Levy and right-back Emerson Royal were also targeted.
But Souness thought Lloris also needed to take a fair share of the blame, shortly after captaining France to the World Cup final.
“I’m not a big fan of Lloris, I’ve said it for a long time,” the talkSPORT co-host said on Sky Sports.
“I think since the start of last season he’s made four errors that have led to goals, that’s the worst record in the Premier League for goalkeepers.
“For me he’s past his sell-by date.”
Sadly for Spurs boss Antonio Conte, Lloris isn’t the only one making individual errors leading to goals, with five from the north London side this season.
Lloris accounts for three of those mistakes, with no other Premier League side making more than his number.
The 36-year-old is in his 11th season with Tottenham having joined from Lyon in 2011, and has committed 23 errors leading to league goals in that time.
Only Asmir Begovic [27] and Petr Cech [24] have made more, with records beginning in the 2006/07 season.
