‘I want to reach the highest level’

Manchester United target Cody Gakpo has not ruled out a move away from PSV Eindhoven as he continues to shine at the World Cup.

The Netherlands winger has been in headline form in Qatar with two goals in the Oranje’s opening two matches, the latest a stunner against Ecuador.

That will no doubt get the world’s top clubs’ attention, with Gakpo already on a whopping 33 goals and assists for club and country since the start of the season.

During the summer transfer window the 23-year-old was the subject of strong interest from Premier League giants United, but manager Erik ten Hag unable to link-up with his countryman at Old Trafford.

That’s likely to be far from the end of the story, though, with Gakpo’s performances only increasing speculation, with the likes of Barcelona, Liverpool and Arsenal also linked.

Unsurprisingly, a number of English journalists were in attendance when they found out Gakpo would be taking the Dutch press conference alongside Daley Blind, and transfer news was high on the agenda.

“Of course I like what they write about me,” he said. “I don’t get embarrassed by those messages.

“Football is a team sport. It’s not about one person. I prefer it to be about us as a team rather than just me as a person.

“As it stands now, I will still be playing for PSV after the winter break. But as I said before the start of the World Cup: we will see what will happen.”

Not only will potential suitors be impressed by Gakpo’s on-field displays, but also his mentality off it, with the young forward impressing in his press conference.

Not only did he come across as humble, but also ambitious when talking about his position and the World Cup.

“At PSV I am always left winger,” he said about his spot up front. “Here we play without a left winger. So I don’t really care where I stand, as long as I play.

“[Louis van Gaal] is trying to challenge me to become a better player. I am grateful to him for that.

“There are still plenty of things that can be improved. For example, I have to try to hold the ball longer in certain situations, so that the rest of the team can join. The guys help me a lot.

“I know what I can do, my challenge is to reach the highest level. I can still improve a lot of things.”

Asked about the Netherlands’ ambitions, he added: “Our goal is to become world champions. That is what we are trying to achieve.”
