Australia lost the second consecutive Davis Cup final this year to Italy, led by a super Jannik Sinner. And the captain of the Australian team, former Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt, shared harsh words towards the new format of the tournament.

The former Slam winner spoke in the press conference on this topic, but not only. In fact, The Australian, at the press conference, also praised the Italian team, but above all Jannik Sinner, a true star of this competition, having won all the singles and doubles matches in which he took part.

“He has shown that he is one of the four best in the world at the moment, the conditions here favor him and he came with great confidence. I am very satisfied with everything my team has done,” he told. As I anticipated at the beginning of the article, Hewitt has not spared harsh controversies over the format of the Davis Cup, which he believes to be excessively monothematic.

In his opinion, something should be changed in the next years, to guarantee a greater spectacle and competition. “The organization was good, they did enough with the format they have. No five-set matches, no home and away matches, always on the same surface? I’m pretty tired of always competing on the same type of court, that’s not the point of competition,” explained Hewitt.

And the Davis Cup final was unique for Italy

The two singles matches were enough to decree the Italian victory, the first 47 years after the last single victory in the competition. To the first match won with great suffering by Matteo Arnaldi, against Alexei Popyrin, was added that of Jannik Sinner, who crushed the blameless Alex De Minaur, leaving him only three games.

The Oceanic national team had first overcome Canada, the defending champion, and then Finland in the semi-final. We recall the Davis Cup got hard criticisms also during the Gerard Pique’s management: according media and insiders, those were the worst edition of last seasons.
