Jannik Sinner admits Carlos Alcaraz match did ‘take out a bit’ from him

Jannik Sinner acknowledged that the match against Carlos Alcaraz did take out mental and physical energy to some extent but noted that he was still ready for Daniil Medvedev. After losing to Alcaraz at the 2022 US Open and this year’s Indian Wells Masters, Sinner was determined to beat the Spaniard at the Miami Masters.

In the Miami semifinal, Sinner recovered from a set down to beat Alcaraz 6-7 (4) 6-4 6-2. But after beating Alcaraz, Sinner suffered a 7-5 6-3 defeat to Medvedev in the Miami final.

Sinner asked if the Alcaraz match took a toll on his physical, mental energy

“No, I mean, it takes, for sure, a little bit, because it was a match what I was very looking forward to.

I was preparing a lot. In the other way, you know, when you step off court, you feel also confident, no? Because winning against Carlos, it was a very, very good win. But to be honest, I was focused already against Daniil, because against Daniil I never won.

It’s always going to be a tough, tough challenge for me to play against him, for sure. But I don’t know. I feel like I’m getting closer and closer. Even today I felt like that the chances are there, so that’s the good thing and the positive thing.

Then we see in the future. But every player has this one or two players where you don’t feel that comfortable with. He’s for sure one of mine. I mean, he’s also one of the best players in the world, no? But still, for sure I have to improve to beat him, like all the other players they try to improve, and then we see in the future how it goes, but it’s gonna be a good challenge for me, a challenge what I am always looking forward to play against him,” Sinner said.

Sinner has now lost to Medvedev in two finals in early 2023. In February, Medvedev came from a set down to beat Sinner in the Rotterdam final. Medvedev now owns a 6-0 head-to-head against Sinner.
