Jon Rahm gives up second place in ranking

Scottie Scheffler, world number one and defending champion, advanced this Saturday to the semifinals of the WGC Dell Technologies in Austin (Texas), in which he will face Sam Burns, while the Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy will face Cameron Young, in a tournament in which Jon Rahm fell on Friday in the group stage.

Precisely Rory’s pass to ‘semis’ will already make the Spaniard ahead in the world rankings. The number 1 is safe for Scheffler.

Scheffler has ten consecutive Match Play victories and beat JT Poston by a hole up and Australia’s Jason Day, a two-time Match Play winner, on Saturday by two holes up and one to play.

The reigning champion of the Augusta Masters and The Players was on the ropes in the round of 16, finding himself down two holes with four remaining. However, he won the fifteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth to get the round pass, in which he faced a Day who beat Matt Kuchar by a hole above.

Scheffler started again with difficulties, who was down three after the first six holes, but it went from less to more. He won eight and nine and chained three consecutive between twelve and fourteen. He sealed the victory on the sixteenth hole, when he made a great birdie and prevented Day, also with a birdie, from prolonging the duel.

He now awaits Sam Burns in the semifinal, who won by two holes up and one by playing Canadian Mackenzie Hughes. The other semifinal will be played by McIlroy, who beat Australian Lucas Herbert in the round of 16 (two up and one to play) and Xander Schauffele in a quarterfinal tie marked by balance and decided on the eighteenth hole in favor of the Northern Irishman.

In fact, only at that time was the winner of four majors on top. The semifinals and the final will be played this Sunday, as well as the final for third and fourth place. Jon Rahm Rodríguez (Barrica, Vizcaya, November 10, 1994) is a Spanish professional golfer,5 current number 1 in the world.

He was number one in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for 60 weeks, holding the absolute record as number 1 in said ranking. He started as a professional in 2016, the year in which he participated in the United States Open, which he would win only 5 years later, on June 20, 2021, being the first Spanish golfer to win this tournament.

In 2017 he was proclaimed champion of the San Diego Open, the Irish Open and the Dubai World Championship. On July 19, 2020, he won the Memorial Tournament (Ohio) and rose to number one in the PGA World Golf Rankings, unseating Rory Mcilroy.

He is the twenty-fourth number one in history, the tenth European and the second Spanish after Severiano Ballesteros.
