The optimism levels at each of these clubs heading into the new season are seemingly polar opposites.

Erik ten Hag is heading into his second season in charge at Old Trafford and has had a successful summer transfer window, leaving most associated with the club confident heading into the new season.

The Dutchman took over a team who had just finished sixth in the table last year, and delivered the club their first trophy since 2017 in the Carabao Cup, an FA Cup final and a top four finish, ensuring Champions League football for this coming season.

The Red Devils have been effective in the transfer market too, signing Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Andre Onana so far, with one or two more rumoured to be joining, leading the club feeling hopeful of challenging in the latter stages of more competitions this season.

Wolves, on the other hand, have just had their manager walk out on them a week before the start of the new season and have had their owner say they can’t afford to spend money on new signings.

Julen Lopetegui became just the second manager in Premier League history to drag a team from the bottom of the table on Christmas Day to survival come the end of the season.

Wolves finished the season 13th in the table and with a seven point cushion between them and the relegation zone.

With Matt Doherty, 31, and Tom King, who was Northampton’s second choice goalkeeper last season in League Two, joining the side as free agents, the club haven’t been able to strengthen and must now deal with a brand new manager.

Gary O’Neil was picked as the man chosen to replace Lopetegui earlier in the week, with the Englishman having impressed in keeping Bournemouth in the Premier League last season.

The club have also had to deal with a number of notable names leaving the exit door, with Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Adama Traore, Nathan Collins, Conor Coady, Diego Costa and Raul Jimenez all departing the club.

Wolves have won just one of their last 10 matches against Manchester United, though that victory did come in January last year at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag did the double both against Wolves and against O’Neil last season, while the latter was in charge of Bournemouth.
