The World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play goes to Sam Burns who in Texas signs the feat by overcoming first in the semifinal Scottie Scheffler – defending champion and world number 1 – after three playoff holes and then in the final, without history (6&5 the result final), Cameron Young.
Third place for the Northern Irishman Rory Mcilroy, now second in the world ranking, who defeated (2&1) Scheffler in the final.

Full booty in Austin for Burns, the 26-year-old from Shreveport (Louisiana, USA) whose success earned him 3,500,000 dollars against a total prize pool of 20 million, allowing him to move from 15th to 10th position in the world ranking and from 52nd to 8th in the FedEx Cup standings.
For the American it is the fifth title on the Pga Tour in 121 appearances, the first in a WGC event. It was since 2006 (Australian Geoff Ogilvy) that a player failed to win the debut WGC-Dell. Burns built on success in the semifinal where, after just three holes, he was 3 up ahead of Scheffler.
Then, he suffered the comeback of the world number 1 who at 10 was ahead 2 up and at 18 he signed the birdie which postponed the contest to the play-offs where Burns placed the final paw. Without history the last act, which was decided after just 13 holes.
Burns’ exploit is also important in terms of the Ryder Cup, now closer to winning a place in the USA team for the challenge against the Europe team scheduled in Rome, on the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club course, from next 29 September to ‘1st October.
Samuel Holland Burns (born July 23, 1996) is an American professional golfer. He played college golf at Louisiana State University and currently participates in men’s professional golf “PGA Tour”. Burns was born in Shreveport, Louisiana to Todd Burns and Beth Burns.
He began his golf career at Calvary Baptist Academy and won three individual state championships. He was named the AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year by the National Junior Golf Association in 2014. Burns attended Louisiana State University and played college golf.
During his sophomore year, he competed in 15 tournaments and won four. He was selected as a member of the All-American All-American Team and was named “Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year” at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship Division 1 sponsored by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
In 2017, Burns participated in the Arnold Palmer Cup, a mixed-gender competition between college golfers’ national and world selections, as a member of the national selection. He also qualified for the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship, where he finished tied for sixth.
