Sinner ‘forgives’ Rune’s annoying drama: “There’s nothing wrong”

Revenge can wait a long time, even sportingly speaking. Novak Djokvoic did it yesterday, avenging last season Monte Carlo defeat against Lorenzo Musetti.

Today, Jannik Sinner avenged the defeat suffered against Holger Rune in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Monte Carlo Rolex Masters. The Italian champion needed three intense sets to beat the Dane and draw the head-to-head match at 2-2.

“It really took a lot to win, it’s never easy to win and I’m happy with the result. It’s a shame not to have taken advantage of the match points in the second set but I’m happy to have stayed in the match. Physically it was hard, now I need to rest for tomorrow. The sensations are good, Tsitsipas is playing well anyway, let’s see how he goes tomorrow,” told Sinner after the match.

About Rune and his attitude, at times annoying, Jannik analyzed: “I only looked at myself, things like this can happen on the pitch. I don’t see anything wrong, chaos can be created and he did it last year too It’s part of the learning process and this time I remained totally focused on the match.”

At the end of the second set, the Dane takes a time violation for the serve and starts to provoke the crowd present at the Monte Carlo Country Club. Another warning arrives, Rune argues with the referee and calls the supervisor.

The match

The match against Rune was highly anticipated. As mentioned, the Dane, precisely in Monte-Carlo twelve months ago, inflicted a heavy defeat on the Italian who, even today, still showed that he is suffering from the Nordic tennis player. However, he obtains a valuable victory, once again showing great mental strength.

Despite the four-plus hours played yesterday, Rune complicated Sinner’s life, especially in the 2nd and 3rd sets.

Despite it being one of the most difficult matches of the season, Jannik kept his cool even after losing the second set. Sinner was ahead 6-4 with two match points in the tie-break but Rune guessed four points in a row to tie the match.

In the third set a break made the difference and in the end Jannik obtained qualification for the semi-finals. Against him will be the two-time Monte Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.
