Tottenham give Arsenal a helping hand in the Premier League title race with win over Man City as Harry Kane scores historic goal and Erling Haaland struggles

Tottenham handed north London rivals Arsenal a title charge advantage as they beat Manchester City on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s side, who have never scored at Spurs’ new ground, and that unwanted record was extended as they were beaten 1-0 in the capital.

Kane became Tottenham’s highest ever goalscorer in the first half

Arsenal missed out on the chance to go eight points clear at the top of the Premier League on Saturday, as they lost 1-0 to strugglers Everton.

But second place Man City couldn’t capitalise on their title rivals’ slip up, as they lost by the same scoreline against Spurs, who as a result have given their bitter foes a helping hand in their dreams of winning the league for the first time since 2004.

Tottenham – who were without boss Antonio Conte – faced a rotated Man City XI, with Guardiola putting key player Kevin de Bruyne on the bench.

Heading into the game, Spurs striker Harry Kane was carrying the knowledge that just one goal would be enough to make him Tottenham’s highest ever scorer.

And it ended up taking him just 15 minutes to do just that.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg picked him out and Kane then found space in the box before firing into the bottom left-hand corner of Ederson’s net.

Man City failed to convert their chances

Man City came agonisingly close to equalising before the break, as Riyad Mahrez’s shot smacked the underside of the crossbar, keeping Spurs ahead.

“Manchester City have been the dominant side – 66 per cent possession and plenty of shots,” talkSPORT’s commentator for the game Nigel Adderley said.

“But they’ve huffed and puffed and barely found Erling Haaland. Their best chance was in added time, when Riyad Mahrez’s shot came back off the crossbar with Lloris beaten.”

Despite the winger having the best chance for the away side in the opening 45 minutes, Guardiola took him off for Kevin de Bruyne in the second half, with his side’s first half performance crying out for the Belgian playmaker.

Whilst Man City did create more in the second half and De Bruyne saw an effort go wide, Tottenham looked to be the side most likely to score.

Kane just missed out doubling his side’s lead on two occasions as the home side broke down the flanks with ease.

But whilst Spurs’ striker was shining, Man City’s couldn’t get a foothold in the game.

That was despite the north London outfit going down to ten men thanks to a second yellow card for Cristian Romero after bringing down an advancing Jack Grealish.

However, Hugo Lloris did have to make a last ditch save and punch the ball away from his goal, clattering into Rodri as a result as he helped his side go just a point off fourth placed Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Man City remain five points off Arsenal.
