Four members of the University of Virginia men’s tennis team have earned an invitation to compete in the individual NCAA championships, which will be held May 22-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. Junior Chris Rodesch (Angelsberg, Luxembourg) is a 9-16 seed in the singles championship.

Youngsters Iñaki Montes (Pamplona, Spain) and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg (Zurich, Switzerland) also earned singles championship bids. Montes and graduate student Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, New York) earned automatic Atlantic Coast Conference qualification into the doubles championship as a top-tier team in the ACC.

Monday 22nd May

On another day hampered by bad weather, the singles matches suffered long delays with Rodesch finishing his match after 1am on the outdoor courts on Tuesday morning. Both von der Schulenburg and Montes moved games indoors with start times pushed back by five hours.

Von der Schulenburg faced No. 22 JJ Tracy in the first round, playing Buckeye for the second day in a row. Von der Schulenburg won 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the second round. Rodesch opened with USC’s No. 39 Peter Makk, winning 7-6 (4), 6-2.

Montes was beaten 6-3, 7-6 (1) by No. 42 Murphy Cassone of ASU.

Today, Tuesday 23 May

Von der Schulenburg will face the top seed in the tournament, Eliot Spizzirri of Texas at 2:00 p.m. Rodesch will face No. 59 Joshua Lapadat of Kentucky at 3 p.m.

Montes and Goetz open the doubles against Stanford’s No. 23 Arthur Fery and Nishesh Basavareddy at 6:30 p.m.
