Wayne Rooney’s win at-all-costs attitude summed up when going all-out to win a drop ball for Manchester United

Boyhood Everton fan Wayne Rooney has been linked with the Goodison Park hot-seat with Frank Lampard on thin ice.

And recently resurfaced footage of the former Toffees star competing for a drop-ball in his playing days suggests he may be exactly the no-nonsense manager the relegation-threatened Merseysiders need.

This week the Premier League’s official Instagram account posted footage of Rooney – Man United’s all-time top-scoring player – in a game against Hull in 2008.

It shows a younger Rooney competing with George Boateng for the ball in a game that terrified an entire generation of school kids after his side threw away a 4-1 lead as the Tigers pulled it back to 4-3 with minutes to go.

An already frustrated Rooney only got angrier when he missed a chance to score United’s fifth.

So, when a drop-ball was given, Rooney took his frustration out on his opponents.

He proceeded to kick Boateng in the shin before taking out Andy Dawson with a terrible challenge.

The Man United star managed to escape with a yellow card. If that incident had happened in the days of VAR, though, he would’ve been a goner.

Whilst Everton wouldn’t be keen on losing any players to bans for lashing out at opponents, they certainly could do with the Rooney-esque firepower that he was renowned for as they fight for Premier League survival.

Following their 4-1 loss against Brighton, Everton sit third from bottom and in the relegation zone, with Lampard’s job looking more at risk by the day.

And their next opponent is the club that took Rooney from them in 2004 – Man United.

And with the ex-Derby manager among the bookies favourites to snap up Lampard’s job, perhaps now is the perfect time for passionate Toffee Rooney to return to Goodison for the third time.
