France striker Olivier Giroud takes anger out on water bottle and bench after being hauled off on 40 minutes in World Cup final against Argentina, and is later yellow carded

France striker Olivier Giroud could not hide his frustration after being substituted in the first-half of the World Cup final against Argentina.

The AC Milan forward was hauled off alongside Ousmane Dembele after 40 minutes of the showpiece event as a woeful French side found themselves 2-0 down.

Giroud was seething with the decision

Didier Deschamps’ reigning champions looked all-but beaten after goals from Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria inside 36 minutes.

Dembele conceded the penalty and gave the ball away on numerous occasions, while Giroud was unable to influence the game.

The decision to bring on Marcus Thuram and Randal Kolo Muani before half-time was a tactical one – and Giroud was furious.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker’s anger was clear to see as he took his seat on the bench next to Dembele.

Cameras captured the 36-year-old throwing a water bottle to the ground and kicking out at the substitutes bench.

Speaking at half-time, Deschamps gave a scathing assessment of his team’s first-half display.

“We utterly failed to show up in the first half,” he said.

“We expected (their intensity), we neither had the correct attitude nor the correct response.

“It will take a lot to worry them and come back. They are really playing a World Cup final.”

However, Deschamps’ substitutions paid off as France staged a stunning comeback within 97 seconds.

Kolo Muani won a penalty which Mbappe converted and Thuram clipped a ball over the top for Mbappe to equalise, in the 80th and 81st minute respectively.

Giroud had been off the pitch for some time but was given a yellow card for animated protests in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage-time.

The drama continued into extra time as Messi and Mbappe scored again to take the game to a penalty shootout.

Argentina scored all four of their spot-kicks but Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni missed, handing Messi and co the world title.
