I don’t need to swing for the fences, but I need to be more offensive

Cori Gauff reveals she probably needs to improve her tactical game and also become a more offensive player. Gauff, 18, is a Grand Slam finalist and she has been ranked at No 4 in the world. Now that Gauff has made some notable achievements, the next goal for her is to win a Grand Slam and become the world No 1.

“I think just how I approach the game tactically. I think mentally I’m approaching it in a somewhat good way,” Gauff said, as quoted on Sportskeeda. Also, Gauff said she doesn’t consider herself a defensive player but noted she can probably be a bit more offensive.

“I wouldn’t say I’m completely a defensive player. I can hit big shots, but I think it’s something I need to do more often. That’s what I’m working on and doing it at the right moments, as well. Not that I need to be stepping inside the court and being a big hitter, because I feel like I have the physicality to play more of an all-around game.

So I think I don’t need to swing for the fences, but also think I need to be more offensive,” Gauff explained.

Gauff was visibly disappointed after her Australian Open exit

In her first tournament of the year, Gauff made it all the way at the ASB Classic in Auckland.

After winning all five of her Auckland matches in straight sets, Gauff also won all of her first three Australian Open matches in straight sets. Then, Gauff was hit with a cold shower as she suffered a surprise 7-5 6-3 loss to Jelena Ostapenko in the Australian Open round-of-16.

For Gauff, it was a devastating end to her Australian Open as she believed this was the tournament where she would make her big Grand Slam breakthrough. In late May and early June, Gauff will try to become a Grand Slam champion at the French Open, the tournament where she reached her first Major final last year.
