Leeds United vs Liverpool predictions

Last weekend, we saw why Liverpool are a fading force and why they have been so successful in recent years – in the same game.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were outclassed by Arsenal for much of the first half at Anfield. The Gunners were quicker, slicker and sharper than their hosts, who looked sluggish in comparison.

Arsenal showed no signs of nerves as they stormed into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus.

But Liverpool halved the deficit before shortly half-time and were much the better team after the interval. Were it not for some heroics from Aaron Ramsey, Arsenal would have departed empty-handed.

The problem for the Reds is that it is hard to envisage them producing a similar showing at an opposition stadium.

That is borne out by their dire record on the road this term. No team in the division has lost fewer home games than Liverpool, whose sole defeat at Anfield was inflicted on them by Leeds under Jesse Marsch.

But Klopp’s team rank only 13th in the away table. They have won fewer matches on the road than Southampton, who are bottom of the table and the odds-on favourites for relegation.

Only once in 2023 have Liverpool triumphed on their travels. Their last four away games have yielded just two points.

Can Liverpool buck the trend on Monday, or will Leeds edge closer to safety?

Leeds United vs Liverpool betting tips

Liverpool have now turned their attention to Europa League qualification, while Leeds are still mired in relegation trouble.

Leeds or draw – 21/20 (Spreadex)

Leeds were hit for six last time out – figuratively and almost literally.

Javi Gracia’s side deservedly took the lead against Crystal Palace, yet a complete collapse in the second half saw the visitors to Elland Road run out 5-1 winners.

It was a rude awakening for Gracia, who has largely succeeded in tightening up the team since he was installed as Marsch’s successor in February.

“We were not aggressive, and soft. After that it is difficult to defend. We have to learn something. When we are 100 percent we can beat anyone. If we don’t we know what can happen,” the Spaniard said afterwards.

The performance was certainly concerning. Leeds totally lost their discipline after the break. They afforded Palace far too much space and paid the price. The extent of the turnaround did not say much for their mental resolve, either.

Yet Leeds have generally done a good job of bouncing back this year. Only once in 2023 have they lost back-to-back matches.

After their last heavy loss, a 4-1 reverse by Arsenal, Leeds won their next game 2-1 against Nottingham Forest.

And with Liverpool having struggled on the road all campaign long, the double chance market is worth exploring.

Under 2.5 goals – 11/8 (Spreadex)

After being on the wrong end of a shellacking last Sunday, Leeds will be determined to keep things tight against Liverpool.

The Whites have now gone six games without a clean sheet, and that is something their manager will be determined to address.

For all that they have underwhelmed in 2022/23, Liverpool still possess an abundance of attacking talent.

Gracia will therefore ensure his players appreciate the importance of defensive structure, not least because Leeds now have the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League this term.

Liverpool have found it tough to put the ball in the net away from home. They are averaging less than a goal per game at rival grounds, and their return of 14 is bettered by relegation candidates like Leeds, Leicester City and Crystal Palace.

In their last 430 minutes of Premier League football away from Anfield, Liverpool have scored a grand total of one goal. They have drawn a blank in five of their last seven top-flight fixtures on unfamiliar turf.

We should not expect this to be a goal-fest, then. Instead, we anticipate a hard-fought encounter in which one strike might be enough to win it.

Draw at half-time – 7/5 (Spreadex)

Klopp will hope that Liverpool can draw confidence from their display in the second half against Arsenal.

The Reds were unfortunate to not have beaten the Premier League leaders, who were given one of their toughest games of the campaign.

But the story of Liverpool’s season is that positive one-off performances or results have seldom produced a sustained upturn in form.

Six days after beating Manchester City at Anfield, the Reds lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest. The 7-0 destruction of Manchester United was followed by a defeat by Bournemouth.

The evidence thus suggests Liverpool will struggle to start this game the way they finished the last one.

As we discussed above, Gracia’s priority will be to not give much away in the early exchanges. The Spaniard, you feel, would be delighted to get to half-time at 0-0.

In nine of Leeds’ 15 home games this term, the scores have been level at the interval. Chelsea and Crystal Palace are the only teams with higher figures in that category.

Liverpool will also be content to slowly build their way into the match. Were they to concede an early opener, self-doubt could creep in once more.

With all that in mind, it would not be a surprise if there was nothing separating these two teams when the second half begins.
