Liverpool and Everton charged by Football Association for Merseyside derby ‘mass confrontation’ that saw Conor Coady grab Andy Robertson’s neck after Reds star laughed in Jordan Pickford’s face

The Football Association have charged both Liverpool and Everton for a clash between their players during the Merseyside derby.

Late on in the match, Andy Robertson kicked the ball away after the referee blew for a handball with Jordan Pickford running over to take a free-kick.

Robertson laughed in the face of the Everton goalkeeper, causing Conor Coady to run over and briefly grab him by the neck.

A melee between the two sides ensued as Liverpool approached full-time in their 2-0 derby win.

Players from both sides, including substitutes, got involved and the FA have now taken action against both clubs.

In a statement, the FA said: “Liverpool and Everton have been charged following a mass confrontation during the 86th minutes of their Premier League match on Monday 13 February.

“It’s alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players and/or benches conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour.

“Liverpool and Everton have until Monday 20 February to provide responses to their charges.”

Following Coady and Robertson’s coming together, many Manchester United fans were wondering why the former wasn’t sent off.

Casemiro saw red nine days prior for a similar incident after he had his hands around of the neck of Crystal Palace’s Will Hughes.

Coady escaped punishment, but the two Merseyside rivals have been charged for the late brawl.

Liverpool’s win was their first Premier League victory of 2023 and it took them to ninth in the table.

Everton went into the derby off the back of a 1-0 win against leaders Arsenal, but the result at their rivals has left them in the relegation zone.
