Manchester United subject of Qatari interest in potential £6billion takeover as new party joins Sir Jim Ratcliffe in race to buy club

Manchester United Football Club is the subject of Qatari interest, talkSPORT understands.

The Glazer family, who currently own the club, have set a deadline for formal bids later this month.

The Daily Mail reports that Qatari investors, comprised of ‘private, high-wealth individuals’ are planning a mega-money move for Manchester United and plan to give manager Erik ten Hag a huge transfer kitty.

The report adds that an offer will be made in the coming days and the people behind it are ‘confident’ it will ‘blow the competition out of the water.’

The Glazers are understood to have set a £6billion asking price for any interested parties.

However, the Mail’s report adds there’s a potential stumbling block due to Qatari Sports Investments’ ownership of Paris Saint-Germain.

One entity is not allowed to enter two clubs in the same competition, with the French giants and Red Devils potentially meeting in Europe.

The bid for Man United would thus need to come from separate, individual Qatari investors. It’s said that only a full-blown takeover is being discussed.

“There are significant funds available,’ a source is quoted telling the Mail. “These people are serious. They want to make sure that United are where they should be and they are confident theirs will be the strongest bid.

“They want to strengthen the squad to put them back at the top but they also want this to be for the good of the community.

“They also want to build on the success of the World Cup. They recognise that Manchester United is the biggest football club in the world, the crown jewels, and there is a steely-minded determination to buy it and get it to where it should be.”

talkSPORT understands that the deal is not as close to happening as the Mail’s report suggests.

A Qatari takeover of the club would surely be beneficial for Ten Hag in the transfer market

The takeover would need Premier League approval and may face opposition in some quarters, given concerns over Qatar’s human rights record.

Britain’s richest man, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is the only one to publicly declare an interest in buying Man United.

The Ineos owner confirmed he wants to buy the club last month after missing out on buying Chelsea to Todd Boehly in May 2022.
