Coach Goran Ivanisevic has confirmed that Novak Djokovic “has not given up” on the possibility of competing at the Miami Masters. Djokovic, 35, wasn’t granted a special permission to enter the United States for the ongoing Indian Wells Masters.
Djokovic withdrew from Indian Wells but he is still on the Miami entry list. Now, coach Ivanisevic reveals Djokovic is still holding hope to get a chance to compete in the second tournament of the Sunshine Double. “We haven’t given up (on Miami).
He wants to play and I would love it if they allow him – it would be great both for him and for tennis. If not, it’s not the end of the world, he didn’t play last year as well. The most important thing is that we find out soon, so that we can make a plan,” Ivanisevic told Tennis Majors.
Ivanisevic on Djokovic’s clay season plans
On April 9th, the Monte Carlo Masters is starting – just a week after the conclusion of the Miami Masters. Now, Ivanisevic acknowledges that playing in Miami could derail a bit Djokovic’s preparation for the clay season.
“In terms of preparing for the European clay-court season, I’m not sure playing in Miami is the best solution. It depends on Novak – in the past he has triumphed in Monte Carlo having played in Indian Wells and Miami.
If he is mentally ready and in his fighter mode, like he was in Australia, then anything is possible,” Ivanisevic explained. Meanwhile, Djokovic returned to action in late February. After winning the Australian Open, Djokovic took some time to address his hamstring injury.
In late February, Djokovic returned to action in Dubai. In his first tournament back, Djokovic won his first three matches before losing to Daniil Medvedev in the Dubai semifinal. For Djokovic, it was his first loss of the season. Before losing to Medvedev, Djokovic had a perfect 15-0 record in 2023.
