Old Trafford belts out ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ at Everton boss Frank Lampard but Conor Coady declares ‘we will fight for him’ despite FA Cup exit to Manchester United

Manchester United fans sang ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ to former Chelsea rival Frank Lampard as they potentially put an end to his Everton career.

Lampard is now eight games without a win as Toffees boss, exiting the FA Cup in the third round with a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford.

The Merseysiders put in a better display than their previous humbling defeats to Brighton, Wolves and Bournemouth, but still needed a first-half gift from David de Gea to get a foothold in the game.

The goalkeeper’s bizarre error saw Conor Coady equalise after Antony’s fourth minute opener, bringing Everton back into the game when it looked like they could be in huge trouble.

However, Coady’s unfortunate second-half own-goal sent things back off course, before a tight offside call denied Dominic Calvert-Lewin an equaliser and Everton a fabulous team goal.

Then as a sucker punch, United substitute Alejandro Garnacho showed his immense talent, winning a penalty for Marcus Rashford to dispatch with ease.

The England striker has now scored in his last seven appearances at Old Trafford, matching Wayne Rooney’s record from 2012.

Lampard looked up to the heavens, while Erik ten Hag looked delighted.

But a few inches could be the difference for Lampard’s career

Chants of ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ began to be belted out at Lampard, a player who scored seven times against the Red Devils in an illustrious career, but the Everton fans had other targets

At full-time talkSPORT’s Hugh Woozencroft read out banners from the away end showing just how bad things are.

“Sack the board, enough is enough and [Bill] Kenwright out,” said the signs, with a potentially departing manager far from the biggest issue according to fans.

One of the key men of the game, Coady, took the chance to back his manager post-match.

“I’m not going to lie, we’re in a bad way, we’re in a bad place, it’s something we want to get out of as soon as possible,” the defender said.

“To lose the game to a penalty and an own-goal against a top side is absolutely gutting.”

When asked about Lampard, Coady continued: “I don’t want to talk about that, the manager is fantastic, he’s brilliant with all of us.

“In fact he’s outstanding with all of us, I think he understands the football club, he’s someone who wants to do right by the football club every day so we need to stand by him.

“We need to keep fighting every day for him, for the staff, and most importantly for the football club.”
