Phil Mickelson blasts PGA Tour and demands public apology ‘for paying millions’ to disparage LIV Golf stars

Phil Mickeson has demanded an apology from the PGA Tour as the civil war in golf rumbles on.

The PGA and LIV Golf struck a deal in June that would see them merge, along with the DP World Tour and be funded by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

However that merger was a surprise to many players, with some finding out the news about their futures on TV, news websites and social media.

A merger that could have offered clarity for golf has instead plunged the sport into deeper turmoil with those involved unclear as to what the future of the sport will now look like.

Mickelson was one of a number of high-profile stars to leave the PGA for LIV Golf in 2022, along with the likes of the likes of Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith, Sergio Garcia and Patrick Reed.

The six-time major championship winner responded to claims suggesting that he and other LIV players could be “given no favours” for the way they left the PGA Tour.

In response, he demanded an apology and sent a message to the media.

Taking to Twitter, he said: “What a colossal waste of time. Not a single player on LIV wants to play PGA Tour.”

The 53-year-old then continued: “It would require a public apology and restitution to LIV players for paying millions to Clout media to disparage all of us.

“A better topic is future sanctions for the many players who now come to LIV.”
