Serena Williams’ ex-coach Patrick Mouratoglou thinks Jannik Sinner will be “playing better and stronger” than Carlos Alcaraz in 2024. Although Alcaraz achieved more success than Sinner in 2023, the Italian still had a much stronger finish to the season, which included winning his first Masters titles in Toronto and Beijing – leading Italy to the Davis Cup title – and finishing as runner-up at the ATP Finals.
While Sinner enjoyed a very successful second part of the 2023 season, Alcaraz went without a single title after winning Wimbledon. Sinner evidently elevated his game to a new level in late 2023 and Mouratoglou believes the 22-year-old Italian could do major things in 2024.
Mouratoglou backs Sinner to ‘play better’ than Alcaraz in 2024
“I think Jannik, with what he’s done at the end of 2023, will be 100% ready to perform at the highest level. It is true that Carlos is a few steps ahead compared to Jannik because he won two Grand Slams.
He has been No 1, he had a lot more tools, and when he came to the tour he started to win. He could do anything, he could attack, he could defend, he had this incredible drop shots, he was coming to the net a lot and he was very effective at the net.
He was already complete. Jannik when he came on tour and he started to win a lot [but] he had a game that was based on his number one quality, which is staying close to the baseline, taking the ball early, playing very fast.
The last two, three years I think Jannik developed a lot of other things. Now he is drop-shotting a lot more, he is coming to the net a lot more with efficiency. I think he is ready to do more things and adapt to different situations.
With the confidence of the last months, I see him playing better and stronger than Carlos next year,” Mouratoglou said in an Instagram post.
