Tottenham suffer another managerial blow as Xabi Alonso pulls out of running

Tottenham have suffered yet another blow in their hunt for a new manager after Xabi Alonso pulled out of the running.

Spurs are currently without a manager having sacked two coaches in Antonio Conte and Cristian Stellini, with Ryan Mason steering the ship until the end of the season.

There have been several managers linked with the vacant spot in north London, including Julian Nagelsmann, Arne Slot and Ruben Amorim.

Another that Tottenham have eyed is Bayer Leverkusen boss Alonso, as talkSPORT reported earlier this month.

But the Spaniard has taken his name out of the hat after insisting he will remain at the BayArena next season.

“I’m happy here with the team and the club,” Alonso told BILD.

“I’m not worried about my future.”

When specifically asked about whether he would still be in the dugout next season, Alonso said: “That’s correct.”

Levy is desperate to find a new boss soon

It is yet another blow to Spurs chief Daniel Levy, who has already been turned down by Nagelsmann over transfer strategy concerns.

After Fabio Paratici resigned from his role as technical director, that has left Tottenham’s plans in the transfer market in disarray ahead of the summer.

It is another position that Levy must find a replacement for before the transfer window opens.

But with Alonso ruling himself out of consideration, it narrows the pool of available coaches ready to take the job at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

There are similarities to the spring of 2021 when Jose Mourinho was sacked and Levy toiled to find a replacement with several options rejecting the chance.

Nuno Espirito Santo ended up taking the reins, though he was sacked after just 124 days.

Levy will be desperate to avoid a similar situation and will want a coach in place to take over before the season ends, ready to step into the role.

It has already rankled with Tottenham fans that club favourite Mauricio Pochettino has accepted the job at Chelsea.

The Argentine is expected to be named as head coach ahead of next season by the end of the week.
