Eddie Howe proved right in hooking Anthony Gordon at half-time as Newcastle come from behind to beat Southampton

Anthony Gordon’s struggles at Newcastle have continued after the winger was hooked at half-time in the 3-1 against Southampton.

The 22-year-old was making just his third start since arriving at St James’ Park from Everton in January in a deal rising to £45million.

But he once again failed to live up to his price tag after an underwhelming first half display, leading to Callum Wilson to replace him.

And it turned out to be an inspired substitution by Eddie Howe as it was Wilson who equalised just nine minutes after the break following Stuart Armstrong’s opener.

The former Bournemouth striker then sealed the victory for the hosts in the 81st minute after Newcastle took the lead following Theo Walcott’s own goal.

Toffees fans were quick to mock Gordon on social media after the forward gleefully celebrated Newcastle’s win at Goodison Park earlier in the week.

Gordon was already an unpopular figure amongst the club’s fanbase after he failed to turn up to training for three days in a row to force through the move to Newcastle.

Taking to Twitter, one user said: “Cheers for the 45m fellas.”

Another posted: “Oh..so karma is real.”

A third added: “First start at home and subbed at half time for star boy.”

This joyous Everton supporter tweeted: “Hahahahahahahahahahahhahahahah he’s absolute cat p*** cheers for 45 mil.”

Meanwhile another stated: “Anthony Gordon will be playing in the Championship in the next three years.”

It is now 11 Premier League games without a goal or assist for Gordon at Newcastle.

Howe hasn’t been shy in hauling off Gordon, with the player reacting furiously after being withdrawn against Brentford earlier this month.

As he made his way off the pitch, Howe was there to greet the youngster, but Gordon shrugged him off, with coach Graeme Jones having to calm him down.

Though there was no bad blood between the pair following the full-time whistle as Howe was pictured with his arm around the player.
